HISTORY/MARKS: The American-born David Haviland settled in Limoges, France in 1842 operating a porcelain exporting business to the USA. In 1847, he established a decorating studio in Limoges. He started producing porcelain in Limoges in 1865 and decorating it on site. His sons, Charles Edward and Theodore, continued the prosperous business after David’s death in 1879. Theodore left to establish his own firm in 1892. Charles Edward continued Haviland & Co. Until his death in 1921. In 1941, Theodore’s son, William, was able to obtain the rights to the old Haviland & Co. Marks and molds and the company was reorganized as Haviland & Co. William retired in 1957 and the company was carried on by his sons. When the sons retired in 1972, management of the company was turned over to the Cerabati Group under the name of Haviland SA. The company remains in business today. It also has the red decorator’s mark for Haviland Limoges. This mark has the pattern name, Trellis, under it in green. It is on the Louis XIV mold blank which was introduced in the 1950′s produced in France. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description. A very large antique highly sculpted cabinet bowl. Backstamp on verso with letters RS inside a crown shape. Hand painted with florals and gold stenciling. Accented in fuchsia and pink colors. Attributed to R S Prussia. It measures approximately 11.5 at the widest on top. Based on the appearance of the ash marks, and overall quality of the piece, I believe this is rather an earlier production, and a stamp is for a decorator. You can see the light through the delicate ornate walls of this bowl. The hand painted flowers are accented with raised enamel trim. While I do not know exact mold, this shape is listed in the gallery of the rsprussia dot com (picture #60). The bowl shown in that gallery is painted differently but in the same fuchsia color theme. The condition of the bowl in this listing is very good with several small spots of paint rubbed off over the high sculpted points and a few minor utensil marks (hardly noticeable). Please look at the pictures and don’t hesitate to ask any questions. Thank you for your interest. This item is in the category “Pottery & Glass\Decorative Cookware, Dinnerware & Serveware\Bowls”.
