Vintage Pottery Bowls

A wonderfully graphic antique 19th-century yellowware footed bowl, decorated throughout with loose brown sponge or spatter decoration over a warm creamy-yellow ground. The bowl has an especially appealing form: a deep rounded bowl rising above a molded pedestal foot with a gently flared base. The irregular brown decoration varies naturally around the surface, creating the expressive, one-of-a-kind character associated with early sponge-decorated utilitarian pottery. Good antique condition with visible age-related wear. There is a chip to the upper rim and a series of chips / losses along part of the lower edge of the pedestal foot. The bowl also sits with a slight lean and does not rest perfectly level on the foot, consistent with the irregular character of early utilitarian pottery. One side of the foot presents more cleanly. Additional glaze wear, small surface losses, firing irregularities, and signs of age are present throughout. Sponge-decorated yellowware was produced as practical household pottery during the 19th century, with its irregular decoration giving each piece an individual appearance. While simple mixing and utility bowls are more frequently encountered, the raised foot and molded pedestal profile give this example a particularly decorative form. Its restrained palette of ochre-brown against warm cream makes it especially attractive within collections of early country pottery, yellowware, spongeware, primitive kitchenware, or American and English material culture.
