This is a beautiful antique casserole dish or tureen in wonderful condition. No cracks and very clean. The base dish does have one chip on the underside edge or rim which is hardley noticeable. Please see picture with rular for reference. The lid is great and overall the piece is in really nice condition for something this old. See pictures for condition. Two tiny spots in the interior bowl are raised bumps seems to have happened in manufacturing process, circled in last photo. Some stains on bottom rim of bowl (pictured). Vintage Lowerdown Pottery Chawan Tea Bowl. Thrown stoneware bowl with small foot. Thick dark tenmoku glaze. Measures 4″ tall and 5.25″ wide. Impressed LD (Lowerdown) stamp on foot with additional illegible marks/signatures. Not certain if this bowl was specifically made by David Leach or another potter/apprentice at the studio. Minimal signs of age and wear, refer to photos. Very well crafted, a joy to hold. DAVID LEACH (1911 – 2005). British potter David Leach was the eldest son of Bernard Leach, known as “the Father of British studio pottery”. He was taught to pot at a young age at the instruction of his father and Shoji Hamada. At the age of 19, David began working at the Leach Pottery in St. Ives, producing everyday functional stoneware taking heavy influence from the Japanese Mingei folk art movement. In 1955, David went on to open his own studio, Lowerdown Pottery.
