This is a beautifully made mid-century Swedish studio stoneware bowl, finished in a rich iron-brown glaze with hand-applied cream slip sgraffito decoration. The repeating fern or wheat motif circling the interior rim is classic Scandinavian design-functional, restrained, and timeless. A substantial, well-balanced form with real presence, equally suited for display or everyday use. Authentic Swedish studio stoneware. Hand-thrown, iron-rich clay body. Hand-applied cream slip sgraffito decoration. Traditional Scandinavian fern / wheat motif. Marked “Made in Sweden” on the base. Impressed workshop mark and size code “20″. Mid-century production, circa 1950s-1970s. Intended as a functional serving or display bowl. Diameter: 8 inches. Depth: approximately 1.5 inches. Very good vintage condition. No cracks, no chips, no repairs. Clean glaze with only light, honest age-appropriate wear to the base consistent with normal use. Decoration is crisp and intact. This is not modern hobby pottery or tourist ware. It is genuine Scandinavian studio stoneware with excellent material quality and classic Nordic form. This vintage and rare Catalina Pottery Fruit Bowl features a unique turquoise interior and Franciscan exterior color, making it a standout piece for all occasions. Handmade in the USA in the 1920s to 1940s using art pottery techniques, this round wavy edge bowl boasts a glossy finish and measures 7.5 in diameter. The bowl design resembles a large flower. The impressed backstamp is hard to read, but it can be seen. It is original and a collectible piece, perfect for adult use and boasting a depth of 3 to 4 inches. Produced on Santa Catalina Island, California, from the 1920s to the 1930s. Initially using the island’s red clay for tiles and bricks, and later for artware and dinnerware. The factory was a division of William Wrigley Jr. In 1937 due to rising production costs. Glatting McBean continued to produce pottery under the Catalina name until it was phased out in 1941.
