Glazed Ceramic Tea Bowl by Toshiko Takaezu

A ceramic tea bowl (chawan) by Japanese American artist Toshiko Takaezu (American, 1922 – 2011). In a classic chawan form, this small tea bowl strikes the viewer with its beautifully applied glaze. On its golden-ochre background, an ink like black glaze creeps onto the surface of the bowl and morphs into a deep brown. It spread like an ink stain actually and drips over the rim into the interior. The effect was spontaneous, abstract and poetic. The artist’s work was heavily influenced by the Japanese ceramic tradition and aesthetics. The bowl is signed with the artist’s cypher on the underside. 2.75 in;Diam. 6.99 cm;Diam.
