Beautiful bowl made by Vivika and Otto Heino. Signed – estimated around the 1980s. Im unsure of the exact time period. Only flaw – very light white scratch blemishes. It seems to have been made during creation. Almost seems like its beneath the glaze. Final picture is the best that I could do to represent the blemish. No chips or damage. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This hand thrown pot is buff clay with a multicolored, glossy glaze. It stands approximately 4 inches tall, and it has a maximum width of about 5 inches. Unpacked, it weighs 1 pound 1.5 ounces. This would be a fine addition to a collection of American studio ceramics. It is vintage, but the exact age is not known. The Heinos are well-known studio potters who are listed in the Vasefinder online museum. There also is an informative write-up about them on Wikipedia. Per Wikipedia, this husband and wife team collaborated on pottery works for over three decades. They met at the League of New Hampshire Arts and Crafts in Concord, New Hampshire and they married in 1950. The couple moved to California, where they each taught at the University of Southern California and then at the Chouinard Art Institute. After around a decade of working in New England during the 1960s and 1970s, the Heinos moved back to California. They established a home and studio in Ojai, where they lived for the rest of their lives. The Heinos are considered important and influential artists in the realm of American studio ceramics. Vivika and Otto Heino were stalwarts in the California studio pottery movement that began in the 1930s and continues to this day. Superb forms expertly thrown with distinctive beautiful glazes were the hallmarks of this husband/wife collaboration. The bowl measures 11″ in diameter and is 2.75″ deep. DESCRIPTION: This museum quality effort from the Heinos is a deep voluminous bowl that rises up out of a beautifully proportioned foot ring and gently retracts to meet a wide recessed rim. The decorative aspects of the pot are no less impressive. The exterior wall has a chocolate brown glaze with near metallic tones at the rim and above the base. In between, it is decorated with a grid created by the intersections of deep carved vertical grooves and shallower horizontal rings. This portion is further adorned with a blend of cobalt blue and milky white glazes. The interior of the bowl has a chestnut speckled creamy white glaze and exhibits meticulous throwing lines that enriches it textural palette. This exceptional work measures app 8 at its widest and stands 5 5/8 high at the rim. It is in mint condition- no chips, cracks or repairs- and has the potters incised first names in the interior of the unglazed foot ring. OTTO HEINO : Ojai ceramic artists Vivika and the late Otto Heino, who worked as a team until Vivika’s death in 1996, are internationally renowned for the technical and aesthetic mastery of their work. They used simple forms, flawlessly thrown, as a vehicle for their varied glazes, which they developed through years of experimentation and study.
