CALIFORNIA USA POTTERY FLOWER BOWL. 2 CAL-ART POTTERY DUCKS. BY BAUER ART – DESIGNED BY RAY MURRAY. FLOWER BOWL: 14″ X 6 3/4″ X 2. HEAD DOWN DUCK: 4 1/2″ WIDE X 2 1/4″ TALL. HEAD UP DUCK: 4 1/2″ TALL X 2 1/2″ WIDEST POINT. I IMMEDIATELY FELL IN LOVE WITH THEM AND THEIR SIMPLISTIC BEAUTY. GORGEOUS SOFT MATTE COLOR TONES OF PALE GREEN AND IVORY/WHITE. NOT SURE IF THEY WERE ORIGINALLY INTENDED AS A SET. THE MATTE OFF-WHITE COLOR OF THE FLOWER BOWL BASE AND THE DUCKS ARE A PERFECT MATCH. THE CONTRAST OF COLOR BETWEEN THE DUCKS AND THE GREEN FLOWER BOWL IS LOVELY. CAL-ART POTTERY WAS INTRODUCED IN 1938 WHEN RAY MURRAY WAS GIVEN A FREE HAND TO DESIGN WHATEVER HE WISHED, BY JIM BOCKMON OF BAUER POTTERY. MURRAY SCULPTED THREE DESIGNS IN MINIATURE DUCKS; HEAD UP, HEAD DOWN AND PREENING DUCK ; THAT WERE PRODUCED IN VERY LIMITED QUANTITIES SO THEY HAVE BECOME HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER PIECES. THE DUCKS WERE HAND MODELED MAKING EACH A UNIQUE WORK OF ART WITH SOME DIFFERENCES IN SIZE. CIRCA 1930 – 1940′s. HANDMADE CALIFORNIA USA #200. BAUER DUCKS HAD NO MARKINGS. Very Good to Excellent Condition. Flower bowl has one small 1/16 chip to the rim. Last 2 pictures show same chip from inside and outside views. Some minor scratches to to bottom base and light wear to the inside of the bowl; nothing serious. The head down;’drinking / crouching’ duck has a tiny’pin hole’ or glaze/paint skip on the underside of his beak; it is not finger-felt and it may be from its inception – please see 3rd to last picture. Please View and Zoom All Pictures. DIVERSE USES FOR DISPLAY – USE AS A CONSOLE TABLE DISPLAY SET; AS A DINING OR COFFEE TABLE CENTERPIECE, ON A BAY WINDOW SILL PERHAPS OVERLOOKING A GARDEN, DISPLAY IN A COVERED GARDEN SETTING; OR WITH YOUR OTHER ART POTTERY COLLECTIONS. A very useful piece for entertaining with snacks in the bowls, as a valet for wallet/keys in the bedroom, or as a trinket/jewelry tray in the bath area. The tray is 12.5 long and has a beautiful red headed pinup with a little glitter on her blue dress as the finale. No chips or cracks. Check out my other items. Vintage Studio Pottery Bowl Description and Item Information Up for sale is this large, vintage, salt-glazed stoneware studio art pottery shallow bowl by the listed California artist, Richard Hieb. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This large, round piece is approximately 15 5/8 inches in diameter, and it is about 2 7/8 inches tall. Unpacked, it weighs over 5 1/4 pounds. The complex cobalt blue decoration contrasts nicely with the gray background; the underside is brown. This would be a fine and rare addition to a collection of vintage American studio ceramics. Identification This piece is by Richard Jacob Hieb of Lodi and Jenner California. He is a listed artist in the Vasefinder online museum. The following information is from Vasefinder, and from the archives of the Lodi News Sentinel from the 1940s and 1950s. Richard Hieb was a student of Tony Prieto at Mills College in Oakland. During the mid-1950s, Hieb studied abroad in Japan. He was the apprentice of and studied for three years with master potter and important mingei folk art movement figure, Shoji Hamada. Hieb had a one man show in Kagashima, Japan. Hieb was a first prize winner at the 30th Annual Kingsley Art Club Exhibition at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. During the late 1950s, Hieb was vice president of the Lodi Ceramic Guild and president of the Lodi Art Club. He worked in salt-glazed stoneware and lustre-painted porcelanous clay. He admired Japanese pottery, saying, The work is not meticulous, nor is it cast with professional skill, but the conceptions of each piece are primitive and free of form. Besides pottery, Hieb also created prize-winning paintings and weavings. He received first prize for a weaving that was displayed at the 1948 Arts & Crafts Exhibition at the California State Fair. He exhibited at the Haggin Museum in Stockton, California, where he had a one man show in 1956, displaying salt glazed stoneware that he produced at Mills College. Hieb also exhibited at the Nationals from 1949 to 1951, and again in 1956. In his prime, Richard Hieb was a well-known artist who was closely associated with many now famous studio potters. Condition This piece looks very good overall, with light wear, but no chips. While examining it under my bright photography lights, I found a very fine, 1 3/4 inch hairline; this does not detract. I owned this plate for more than a decade without noticing it. Some scattered, small extra clay bits to the interior are as made. Slight asymmetry in shape is also as made. Terms of Sale 1. Payments must be received within three days of the end of the listing, unless prior arrangements have been made. Some countries have restrictions or prohibitions on certain classes of merchandise. And international government regulations prohibit such behavior. Individual computers may display colors differently.
