Portmeirion Totem Blue Teapot, 4 Cups & Saucers, Milk Jug & Sugar Bowl. Fantastic Vintage 1960s PORTMEIRION TOTEM blue designed by Susan Williams Ellis, Stoke on-Trent, England circa 1963. Portmeirion Totem is a design that symbolises the sixties; with its striking cylindrical shape and angular handle derived from native American Indian cultural art in a raised relief featuring stars and spirals that Susan had carved by hand directly into the mould. Launched in 1963, Totem created a sensation. It was different, an idea no-one had thought of, and brilliantly executed. Orders poured in and production struggled to keep pace. It was Susan Williams-Ellis’ first and most dramatic breakthrough. A little pottery company that no-one had heard of suddenly led the way. Totem rapidly became the mainstay of the company and during the 1960′s Susan continuously added more pieces to the range, at times experimenting with quite large versions of the symbols.
