Vintage Yellow Ware Stoneware Pottery Pig Bowl Mortar Molcajete

The bowl is solid and heavy. Weights approximately 2 lbs and 13 oz. It measures approximately 3 1/2″ tall x 6 3/4″ wide. The interior of the bowl has raised circular ridges. It does have very fine fritting to the foot rim, fine and tight crazing throughout, light glaze and surface scratches and scuffing here and there, and other signs of light wear consistent with age. Measures just over 12.25″ across top x 5.75″ tall and 4.75 across base. Weighs a hefty 5.5 pounds. Striking mottled green/brown/gray exterior with stunning variable mineral interior. Colors are glossy & vibrant. Signed in Shaner’s familiar script on base. Hard to discern without strong light but 100% guaranteed. One shallow indent on side – likely by artist’s hand (last photo). David Shaner received his M. From the Alfred University School Of Ceramics in the 1950′s. He later became the director of the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramics Arts in Helena, Montana. Beautiful handcrafted stoneware bowl with bluish gray gradient glaze interior and tenmoku exterior. Color and design look like something from he natural world, like the iris of an eye or an occurence in space. Rim has unique slits or pockets around the perimeter. Potter is unknown, but the piece looks like it has some age to it circa mid 20th century around 1960/1970. No damage, but the glaze show some crazing in the center.
