Hammat Pottery Mid-Century Original Footed Vase / Bowl #357. Size: 9.75″ in diameter, 6.5″ tall. Made by an American ceramic Artist Flora Eckert Hammat in between in late 1940′s or 1950′s. Good condition, Maker’s mark on the bottom, previous owner used black marker to write on the bottom and scratch it out, see pictures for details.

For your consideration is an outstanding large ceramic bowl in the centuries old traditions of Spanish art pottery. Large, conical shaped bowl, which could be displayed at the wall. All hand turned and hand painted with characteristic copper luster Medieval Moorish-inspired motifs, aka Arte Mudejar. Made by Gimeno Rios, one of the well known artisans of the world famous Manises ceramics school near Valencia. Signed at the bottom : Gimeno Rios / Manises. A well listed and noted mid-century studio potter, Don Johns worked in Illinois and later in North Carolina, passing away in 2017. Worked in a variety of mid-century studio styles, including Brutalist. This piece dates from the mid to late 60′s. Note the pantyhose ad he somehow impressed into the clay – those became the latest thing in the age of the mini skirt in the mid 60s. Note also the fashionable women dressed in that period’s style. The free form rolled out clay with a dark rustic border and the rustic feet echo the brutalist movement, while the lighter hues of the top, along with nods to popular culture may have been a transition piece for Johns.
