Quimper faience is produced in a factory near Quimper, in Brittany, France. Since 1708, Quimper faience (“faïence” in French) has been painted by hand, and production continues to this day. “Petit Breton” plate, Henriot, c1925. The “Faïenceries de Quimper” were established in “Locmaria”, the historical faience quarter of the city of Quimper, near the center. The Faïencerie d’Art Breton, newly created in 1994, was also established in Quimper, but outside the historical quarter “Locmaria”. “Locmaria” now also houses a Quimper faience museum. The pottery’s design reflects a traditional Breton influence. One design, which became typical for Quimper faience, is the “petit breton”, a naive representation of Breton man and/or woman in traditional Breton costume. The “petit breton” became popular around 1870 and is still today the main design bought by tourists. Older Quimper faience items are sought after by collectors worldwide. Rare set of 4.5 hand-painted cereal/porridge bowls.

Here we have an absolutely stunning punch bowl from the early days of H & C Selb Bavaria, featuring an iridescent “oil spill” glaze with gold gilt trim and hand-painted (signed by Ida Sommer) bright blue birds with red breasts soaring on the interior and exterior of the bowl. Vintage: the mark on this piece was in use circa 1910s-1920s. Maker/Marks : H&C Selb Bavaria/see photo of back for mark in green, and signature of Ida Sommer in gold. Approximate Measurements : please see photos with rulers and category details above. Our photographs reveal the condition best — please enlarge and zoom in on them, and examine them carefully. We often add graphics such as arrows, circles, and text boxes to our photos to point out things of interest that might be hard to see, such as a price tag or maker’s mark, as well as to highlight many condition flaws. Very clean and fresh piece in remarkable condition for its age. There is a bit of gold loss in one spot along the rim, but otherwise, gold is bright and shiny and nearly 100% present. Just some very light wear that isn’t noticeable unless you’re right on top of it, looking for it. One glaze pop in the interior of the bowl — see photo highlighting it. No chips or cracks, and no silver/gray utensil marks, stains or noticeable scratches. We consider funky odors (cigarette smoke, mildew, etc) to be an important part of a condition report. Corndogcache is a 100% non-smoking environment, and we’ll let you know if any of our vintage items smell like it (or anything else) from activities they may have been involved in before they came to us.
