Evans, who died in 2009, was born in Wales, became a scientist, then moved to California to make pottery. Tony traveled to Japan and Korea to learn this art of Raku from clay masters and it became a passion. Raku pottery is the ancient technique of first firing individual pieces in a 2,000-degree fire and then quickly submerging the piece in a pit of leaves or paper to “reduce” the chemical reaction on the surface, creating a broken eggshell or multi-hued luster and cobalt blue and copper red sheens. The vase/bowl is in watery tones of blues, greens, whites, pinks and. Terra-cotta colors, with heavy glazed look in the top and around the mouth. No signs of chips or breakage.
