The pot has thin walls and feels wonderfully smooth to the touch. It shows a nicely painted polychrome design. I’m not sure, but the white double pointed design may represent prayer feathers and the area with stipling and a rectangular area underneath, may represent the pueblo village or fields. The symbols painted onto a Hopi pot are symbolic and almost always carry a message. The bowl measures 2 3/8″ high by 4 3/4″ across. There is some light scuffing to the paint, but overall this pot is in excellent vintage condition. This pot is signed by Nancy on the bottom. Modern Hopi potters make their pottery in the traditional manner. The clay is hand dug on the Hopi mesas and hand processed. The pots are carefully hand constructed using the coil and scrape techniques their ancestors taught them. The paints used are from naturally occurring materials. For example, black paint is made from Beeweed. The intricate and beautiful designs are painted free hand using a yucca leaf brush. The pots are then fired in the open air out on the mesa using sheep dung and cedar as a heat source. The Hopi Tribe is a sovereign nation located in northeastern Arizona and is made up of 12 villages on three mesas. The Hopi welcome to visitors on their website states: Since time immemorial the Hopi people have lived in Hopitutskwa and have maintained our sacred covenant with Maasaw, the ancient caretaker of the earth, to live as peaceful and humble farmers respectful of the land and its resources. Over the centuries we have survived as a tribe, and to this day have managed to retain our culture, language and religion despite influences from the outside world. Missing parts and has damage. Will only be accepted if there was a gross material error in description. Are to the best of our knowledge and research and are purely our opinion. We do not test cameras, electronics and other items for working ability unless stated. Any stipulation as to age or authenticity is purely speculative and judgmental. We are not museum curators and are not expert enough to guarantee such. There have been reproductions so fine they have even fooled the “experts”. Many people get confused with the words Vintage and Antique. Vintage means “of the period” and not necessarily a particular number of years old. You can have a 2007 Vintage wine, for example. In General, the word Antique means 100 years old. And that varies in categories. In the ART category, an antique is pre 1900 while in the collectible category under clocks an antique is pre 1930. We honest dealers can only give our best estimate and judgment as to the items age, condition and value. For hundreds more Antiques & Collectibles, Check out my other store: Popeye Playground.
