The pot has thin walls and feels wonderfully smooth to the touch. It shows a nicely painted polychrome design. I’m not sure, but the white double pointed design may represent prayer feathers and the area with stipling and a rectangular area underneath, may represent the pueblo village or fields. The symbols painted onto a Hopi pot are symbolic and almost always carry a message. The bowl measures 2 3/8″ high by 4 3/4″ across. There is some light scuffing to the paint, but overall this pot is in excellent vintage condition. This pot is signed by Nancy on the bottom. Modern Hopi potters make their pottery in the traditional manner. The clay is hand dug on the Hopi mesas and hand processed. The pots are carefully hand constructed using the coil and scrape techniques their ancestors taught them. The paints used are from naturally occurring materials. For example, black paint is made from Beeweed. The intricate and beautiful designs are painted free hand using a yucca leaf brush. The pots are then fired in the open air out on the mesa using sheep dung and cedar as a heat source. The Hopi Tribe is a sovereign nation located in northeastern Arizona and is made up of 12 villages on three mesas. The Hopi welcome to visitors on their website states: Since time immemorial the Hopi people have lived in Hopitutskwa and have maintained our sacred covenant with Maasaw, the ancient caretaker of the earth, to live as peaceful and humble farmers respectful of the land and its resources. Over the centuries we have survived as a tribe, and to this day have managed to retain our culture, language and religion despite influences from the outside world. New items will be listed every week. Our prices are better than wholesale. We guarantee all of our Native American Indian items to be AUTHENTIC American Indian traditional arts. Many areas where the black coloring is worn (see pics around the bowl). Several chips (5 -7) around the top lip of the bowl and a few small ones (3) on the sides of the bowl. Outside is glazed and inside is still unglazed. Bottom has a nickel size rough patch where the orange glaze has been chipped away and a rectangular dark spot where a sticker may have been. Signed in etched cursive on the bottom of bowl what looks to me Betts – please see photographs. This was my mothers piece and she was an antique dealer so I have no idea where it came from. Total top diameter 5 1/4 across, inside diameter just under 3 1/2 Bottom is not flat, more rounded so bowl does not sit flat. Top edges are not perfectly even either – on side higher than the other.
