RARE BIRD MOTIF w/ WHITE KAOLIN. Easily Attributed to Nampeyo of Hano. “Circa 1901 -1905, Pre-Hopi House Era”. Wide & 3-1/2 in. The Sikyatki inspired twin “Man-Eagle” birds. The bowl is more. White-like in the daylight than what the photos display. Note the new last photo with sunlight – with another bowl (NOT included in this Listing). It may help to illustrate the aged color, and provide comparison of the antique color tone of. The black and “splotchy” red finishes, as well as the main body color. Note a minor chip on rim of Bird bowl & age related abrasion. Again, the 2nd bowl is NOT included in this listing. There is no question who made that one. This Nampeyo bowl is slipped with a non-crazing white kaolin slip as opposed to the typical crazing seen in the slip of Polacca wares. During the first decade of the 20th century, Kaolin slip was obtained from the Coyote Springs area. Coyote Springs was by the Nampeyo family ranch and supplied the finest kaolin clay in the area. Apparently, the kaolin deposit at Coyote Springs became exhausted during the first decade of the 20th century. Vintage Old Hopi Style SIKYATKI Polychrome Pottery Bowl by “Chakoptewa” c1990. For your consideration is this superb vintage handcrafted old Hopi style Si kyatki pottery bowl by artisan Mike Hawley (d), circa 1990. The Scottsdale AZ contemporary artist Mike Hawley ha d been creating pottery in the old Hopi Sikyatki style since the 19 70s. Mike Hawleys pottery are not imitations of ancient pottery, they are instead modern works of art which have original designs inspired by those on ancient Hopi ceramics. He call ed these “Chapkot ewa Polychrome” pottery, named after his adopted Hopi name. This great contemporary artist of Old Hopi Sikyatki pottery style passed away on April 24, 2012. Only hand-ground clay dug on Antelope Mesa on the Hopi Reservation was used to coil, shape, polish, paint and coal fire this pot in a firing pit the artist constructed himself. All of his pigments were made by hand from minerals and plants indigenous to the Hopi Mesas and each of his painted design is original and within the Sikyatki design tradition. This absolutely beautiful hand coiled pottery bowl is in very good condition with minor surface flaws on the lower outer bowl. This Chakoptewa Polychrome Pottery measures about 3-1/2″ tall, about 9-1/2″ around and has an opening of approx 8-5/8. This vintage Hopi bowl has a very typical beautiful wing and tail feather design. (some feel this is the Hopi migration design). The design is a bit more intricate than some and there is above the wing/tail feather design an area of almost sponged black paint (in the 1/4 circle over 3 black lines atop the wing/tail feather design)…. This sponged like work is associated with Nampeyo (or the Nampeyo family). The sticker on the side and the rather uneven rust paint appear to be 1920-30′s.
