Over here in France a standard breakfast or “petite déjeuner” is a bowl, yes a bowl, full of café au lait or hot chocolate, or roasted chicoree and milk. They use a bowl so they can easily dip their croissants or baguettes into the brew. Coffee cups are just to small to adroitly make this manoever. There are literally thousands of different motifs an gosh knows how many manufacturers. No doubt they have been used for thousands and thousands of breakfasts over their long lives and now perhaps if you don’t plan to put them into service they are ready for retirement on a nice comfy display shelf in your kitchen or dining room. This beautiful collection of 5 bowls in tones of orange and white. These bowls have seen quite a few “petite dejeuners” since the 1930s/1960′s but they are still very decorative if not practical. These bowls can be used for all sorts of things: hors d’ouvres, candy display, flower bouquets etc. If you see bowls among my sets that you would rather have feel free to contact me and I will work with you to create the collection you want. Vintage French Vallauris Pottery Bowl C. Height 7,25cm, Diameter 30cm. Fine original condition with some glaze nicks around the rim. A stylish vintage French Vallauris bowl decorated with a bull fight scene in the manner of Picasso and dating from around 1950. Picasso moved to Vallauris in 1948 and lived there until 1955. He had a close working relationship with the Madoura Pottery in Vallauris. This particular bowl is certainly produced in the style of Picasso, if not by him, and stands on a narrow rounded foot with a raised rounded rim with the centre of the bowl incised and hand painted with a bull fight ring with two matadors, one holding two swords and another on horse back challenging a raging bull. A distinct figure sits in the foreground with a stylized stadium with indistinct figures in the back ground. The dish combines brightly coloured and matt black glazes on a muted grey ground. The bowl has an impressed Vallauris potters mark to the base. We cannot and will not declare items below the sale value. This item has been fully inspected in house. We are downsizing our mermaid collection and this highly detailed piece has always been one of our favorites. In the center of the all-white majolica plate/shallow bowl is a coy mermaid astride a flying fish above the waves. Her left hand is resting on the fish while her right hand appears to be clutching strands of seaweed. Two other fish are watching them with amused expressions. The edges of the plate feature lobsters and branches of coral. The bottom of the plate has a shallow pedestal/foot along with the stamp P. We believe the P. Stands for PARRY VIELLE. The plate is in good condition. There are pinpricks on the upper side (see photos with arrows) and no major chips/cracks/stains. Underneath on the inside of the foot there are some minor nicks and one larger chip that does not distract from the piece. This plate is approximately 8-1/4 inches high x 8-1/4 inches across. It stands approximately 1-1/4 inches above the table surface. This will make a great addition to a mermaid collection. The white color will fit into any French country décor. We are a smoke-free/pet-free home. The item “Vintage Mermaid And Fish White Majolica French Plate Bowl France Scarce” is in sale since Thursday, April 25, 2019.
