This is an exceptional, authentic piece of vintage American studio art pottery by the artisan signed. Combining organic textures with a sharp mid-century modern sensibility, this 10-inch low bowl/rimmed plate is an exquisite example of late 20th-century clay craft. Its substantial weight and commanding visual contrast make it equally suited as a functional serving piece or a striking centerpiece display vessel. Design, Artistry & Glaze Technique. Hand-thrown from a durable, heavy stoneware clay body. The interior basin features a brilliant satin-matte cream glaze, beautifully punctuated by a dense, natural iron-spot “speckling” that emerges natively from the clay body during the kiln firing. Cutting boldly across the face of the dish is an inlaid, abstract geometric chevron (V-shape) segment. The dark, unglazed earth-tone section is heavily manipulated with intricate, deeply carved abstract incisions reminiscent of natural bark, fossilized twigs, or volcanic striations. This rough, brutalist texture creates a magnificent tactile contrast against the smooth, glassy glaze surrounding it. The reverse displays a cleanly trimmed, unglazed foot ring revealing the raw, gritty personality of the natural stoneware clay. Centered perfectly within the foot ring is the artist’s hand-incised, elegant cursive signature. This piece has been remarkably well-preserved. Free of chips, cracks, hairline fractures, or structural repairs. The glaze remains bright and clear, showing no signs of heavy utensils use, scratching, or dulling. He completely taught himself the craft, opening his landmark retail storefront and active studio, Brad Walker Pottery, in 1975. Downtown Staple : Operating out of the same location on Dahlonega’s public square for over 50 years, his business stands as one of the oldest thriving commercial shops in the area. Philosophy : Rather than focus on mass industrial manufacturing, Walker works with a personal philosophy of “touching lives rather than just making cups, ” aiming to create deep storytelling connections with people through his clay. Artistic Style & Technique. Forms & Textures : His signature catalog consists of hand-sculpted, wheel-thrown functional stoneware, emphasizing fluted rims, carved structural details, and geometric patterns. Glaze & Poetry : He is known for using complex reactive drip glazes, rich earth tones, textured crawling effects, and vibrant oceanic blues or teals. Many of his premium accent pieces incorporate handwritten, etched poetic lines from classic writers like Walt Whitman and Rumi. The majority of the description. This is a heavy pot, weighing nearly 4 pounds! The carving and painting are all very well done, clean and sharp. This is a polychrome Potsuwii-style jar decorated with a four-panel painted and carved feather, kiva step and geometric design around the body. 6.25 in W by 5.5 in H Condition: Very Good Signature: Rosita De Herrera San Juan Pue, N. From the Kings Gallery and the Salazar Rio del Norte Center. Pottery from San Juan Pueblo (today known as Ohkay Ohwingeh) has long been prized. Before 1900, San Juan pottery was either red-on-tan or polished black and usually not decorated. In the 1930s Regina. A Spanish woman who had married into the pueblo, introduced a new style of pottery. Regina organized a group of potters, including Reyecita A. Trujillo and Tomasita Montoya, whose pots the museum is fortunate to have acquired. The shards had been discovered in the abandoned ancestral village of San Juan, across the Rio Grande from the current pueblo. This new style of pottery consisted mostly of red ware. The rim and base of the pots are usually polished red with an unslipped, buff-colored band in between. The band is either carved and decorated with red, buff, and white matte paints or incised with a micaceous slip, which is applied before the firing of the pot.
