The breathtakingly pretty Italianate style village of Portmeirion in North Wales was created by architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, who wanted to show how a naturally beautiful site could be developed without spoiling it. Sir Clough Williams-Ellis daughter Susan went to the progressive DartingtonS chool, studying pottery under Bernard and David Leach. She went on to study painting with Graham Sutherland and sculpture at the Henry Moore Chelsea School of Art. Having taken over the loss-making gift shop in Portmeirion village, Susans first venture into commercial pottery was to have her own designs painted onto blanks by A E Gray a Stoke-on-Trent pottery factory, famous for producing Susie Cooper’s designs. They founded Portmeirion Pottery in January 1962, and Susan’s artistic talent and vision introduced fresh new ideas to the world of ceramics. Portmeirion pieces were instantly recognisable for their tall, elegant silhouettes, decorated with patterns inspired by primitive art and ancient civilisations, which captured the mode of the sixties perfectly, quickly becoming design icons. The tall shape known as’Cylinder’ was key to the look of Portmeirion in the 60s. Williams-Ellis based it on the fortuitous discovery in Kirkham’s archives of patterns of tall cylindrical shapes for medical ware. Of the later cylinder shapes, the most successful was the Greek Key design, which was introduced in 1965 and produced well into the 70s. The inspiration for the Greek Key pattern came from a Victorian copper plate also discovered in the archives of Kirkham’s. The combination of a design so strongly associated with ancient Greek culture, printed onto the modern cylinder shape resulted in a uniquely’sixties’ piece, which remains very desirable today. The Greek Key design was originally produced as a black pattern printed onto a glossy white body, but the range was later expanded to include the following colour combinations. Gold on matt black. Gold on matt white. The Greek Key design was so popular that in 1968 the range was further expanded to include a new range of air tight kitchen containers with wooden lids, to complement the existing tea and coffee services, dinner plates and tureens. Fresh from a local Texas estate is this vintage Amoeba bowl by master San Antonio potter Harding Black. Signed “Harding Black 1953″. It is in excellent condition, there are four small grooves on the backside edge , as well as a tiny scratch/divot on the rim as shown. I’m not sure if they are tool marks/imperfections from when it was made or occurred some other time in its life. In any event they are not obvious or distracting. Some dark spots here and there on the unglazed rim/backside. No cracks or repairs. 10 1/2″ x 7″ x 2 1/2 h and weighs about 5 1/2 lbs.
