Eugene White pieces were produced from 1942 – 1948. This beautiful terra-cotta bowl has a wonderful hand-hammered lid. The bowl is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. The bowl does have crazing throughout – but Eugene made most of his pieces with a decorative crackle glaze so this piece probably came out of his studio this way. Other than that here are no chips or cracks to the bowl. The underside of the bowl is inscribed with “Eugene White California” in script. This bowl measures 13 3/4″ in diameter and is 2 5/8″ high from flat surface (table) to rim. The lid is hand-hammered with a piece of glazed ceramic as the handle – trapped by a copper strap riveted to the lid with 2 tiny copper studs. I have not touched the copper in terms of cleaning so you have a vintage patina! Don’t let this piece pass you by – particularly if you live in Arts & Crafts / Craftsman home! Offered in this listing is a beautiful and very rare matching Alfred Meakin Pixieware nursery 4 piece breakfast set! To find an individual piece of Meakin Pixieware is rare enough; but to find four matching pieces in such good condition is something very special indeed. The bowl is particularly hard to come by, we have been told! Featuring a little girl and boy dressed in bunny rabbit costumes, blowing bubbles and playing with animals, the artwork has all the charm and warm humour characteristic of the artist. They date to circa 1945, as indicated by maker’s mark logo on the underside of three of the pieces (the cup was not often marked but has the word’England’ across the base and is unmistakably Meakin). A great decoration for a nursery or great for a collector of Alfred Meakin ware! (Please note: plate stand not included). Dimensions: Cup: approximately 4″ (10.3 cm) at its widest point (including the handle) and 2.6″ (6.8 cm) high. Saucer: approximately 5.6 (14.4 cm) across. Plate: approximately 6.8 (17.4 cm) across. Bowl: approximately 6.9″ (17.6 cm) across and 1.4″ (3.6 cm) deep. Condition: Overall very good vintage condition for these very rare pieces, with the usual scuffs to the artwork associated with age and careful use. The large plate is heavily crazed across the piece, the cup and saucer have very small amounts of crazing in places and the bowl has no crazing we could find. Paint loss is very minimal across all the pieces, the green edges exhibit some rubbing. The images on all pieces are predominantly unaffected. There are no cracks to any of the pieces. The usual’firing stand’ marks on the back of the plates where the pieces have been fired in the kiln. They pieces exhibit slight yellowing. Of note, the only true fault we could find is a small chip to the lower left edges of the saucer which measures approximately 7mm by 3mm. Please study the photographs (taking advantage of the zoom function) as these form a valuable part of the description. Colours are as accurate as our camera and monitor will allow but may vary slightly. Thank you for your understanding.
