RARE VINTAGE 60′S. This is a rare vintage mid-century lion bowl/planter by Italian ceramics designer Giovanni DeSimone. It’s never been used and is in excellent condition with no damage or other “issues”. It stands about 7 1/2″ tall, measures about 6 3/4″ long from tail to nose, and is about 5 1/4 wide. It weighs just under 2 lbs. This beautiful and functional piece would make a nice addition to any art pottery collection and will look great anywhere you put it. Giovanni De Simone was born 1930 and opened his studio after World War II around 1947. He died in 1991 in Palermo, Italy. Giovanni De Simone was a celebrated Italian ceramic designer. He studied at the School of Ceramics in Faenza, Italy, where he was taught by Angel Biancini and Anselmo Bucci. Previously he had attended school at Liceo Tasso in Rome. He worked from his studio in Palermo where he used oven firing to make the lead free colors permanent on his Majolica ceramics. His work is characterized by intense colors and his drawing style is often compared to Picassos. During World War II his mother and father were imprisoned in a concentration camp. He was responsible for caring for his sister during this time. Eventually he and his sister joined their mother in the concentration camp. Following the war the family was repatriated and reunited in Rome. But soon the family moved into Romagna, a territory in central Italy and home of his mother. The choice of Romagna proved decisive for the life of the young Giovanni, he enrolled in famed Instituto dArte per la Ceramica founded by in Faenza. He had found his home. Vintage Studio Pottery Bowl Description and Item Information Up for sale is this large, vintage, salt-glazed stoneware studio art pottery shallow bowl by the listed California artist, Richard Hieb. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This large, round piece is approximately 15 5/8 inches in diameter, and it is about 2 7/8 inches tall. Unpacked, it weighs over 5 1/4 pounds. The complex cobalt blue decoration contrasts nicely with the gray background; the underside is brown. This would be a fine and rare addition to a collection of vintage American studio ceramics. Identification This piece is by Richard Jacob Hieb of California. He is a listed artist in the Vasefinder online museum. The following information is from Vasefinder, and from the archives of the Lodi News Sentinel from the 1940s and 1950s. Richard Hieb was a student of Tony Prieto at Mills College in Oakland. During the mid-1950s, Hieb studied abroad in Japan. He was the apprentice of and studied for three years with master potter and important mingei folk art movement figure, Shoji Hamada. Hieb had a one man show in Kagashima, Japan. Hieb was a first prize winner at the 30th Annual Kingsley Art Club Exhibition at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. During the late 1950s, Hieb was vice president of the Lodi Ceramic Guild and president of the Lodi Art Club. He worked in salt-glazed stoneware and lustre-painted porcelanous clay. He admired Japanese pottery, saying, The work is not meticulous, nor is it cast with professional skill, but the conceptions of each piece are primitive and free of form. Besides pottery, Hieb also created prize-winning paintings and weavings. He received first prize for a weaving that was displayed at the 1948 Arts & Crafts Exhibition at the California State Fair. He exhibited at the Haggin Museum in Stockton, California, where he had a one man show in 1956, displaying salt glazed stoneware that he produced at Mills College. Hieb also exhibited at the Nationals from 1949 to 1951, and again in 1956. Condition This piece looks very good overall, with light wear, but no chips. While examining it under my bright photography lights, I found a very fine, 1 3/4 inch hairline; this does not detract. I owned this plate for more than a decade without noticing it. Some scattered, small extra clay bits to the interior are as made. Slight asymmetry in shape is also as made. Terms of Sale 1. Payments must be received within three days of the end of the listing, unless prior arrangements have been made. Some countries have restrictions or prohibitions on certain classes of merchandise.
