1956 Harding Black Studio Pottery Red Bowl. Outstanding Harding Black bowl in the simplest form, but the glaze is what makes this piece special. I believe it to be an example of his famous Copper Red or Copper Oxide glaze-but you be the judge. It’s a deep, gorgeous color. The rim is almost white and overall, it has a black crackle effect. The glaze is a bit mottled on the underside. Please see all photos as they can show the nuances of this bowl better than I can describe them. A truly beautiful example of this pioneer potter’s earlier work! Measures: 7.5″ diameter and sits about 2.125″ tall. Condition: Excellent, original condition, unaltered, with some inherent imperfections, but no damage to note. Signed and dated on the underside. Most notably, he made functional stoneware pots fired in a high-fire, reduction atmosphere kiln, (he also worked in mid-range fired earthenware), and is known for his extensive glaze research. As a self-taught chemist, he masterfully reproduced ancient Chinese and Oriental glazes, sharing his knowledge and formulas freely. Considered a pioneer of modern handmade pottery in Texas, Harding Black’s work with clay serves as an important bridge between the contrasting styles of early Texas, and mid-century pottery. In 1932 he began teaching children’s ceramics classes at the Witte Museum, San Antonio, Texas. Black retired from teaching in 1956 to devote his time completely to making ceramics as a studio potter. He retired in 1997. This item is in the category “Pottery & Glass\Decorative Cookware, Dinnerware & Serveware\Bowls”. The seller is “omniavintage” and is located in this country: US. Societe Ceramique: Maastricht, Holland, Rare Large Copper Luster Rice Bowl, Goudkust Pattern, late 19th century. After his father’s death Petrus had to leave school at the age of fourteen to help his mother in the business. In 1836 he founded the pottery that was to flourish. In addition to being a versatile and energetic entrepreneur, Regout was a member of the Senate (Eerste Kamer) of the Dutch Parliament and the author of a number of brochures on social and economic issues. At the end of the 17th century the Dutch Delft pottery industry had 45 workshops with 10,000 workers. By the end of the 18th century, facing mounting competition from the North Staffordshire potteries, the industry had declined to 28 factories with as few as 280 workers and by 1850 only two potteries and 76 workers remained. It was in that context that the. Royal Sphinx factory was established by Petrus Regout in 1834. It was located in Maastricht, Holland. First, he started a glass factory. Two years later production of pottery began. Pottery production was initially concentrated on so called faience commune – simple pottery for a local market. Around 1840 printed decoration was introduced in Maastricht, to peak in quality as well as quantity by the end of the 19th century. This company was to become one of the most important Dutch tableware manufacturers, reaching its peak during the period between the two World Wars. At its start, Petrus Regout was unable to match the English ware in quality but his price was 40-50% cheaper. With the help of an English advisor and some Staffordshire potters he solved the problem of quality. Production gradually was adapted to higher standards thanks to hired British specialists to compete with popular British creamware. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Petrus Regout became well-known for its successful. Transfer ware copies of English, German, Chinese and Japanese tableware, most commonly in the blue and white colors popularized by the European fascination with Chinese and Japanese ceramics. As Petrus Regout aged, his sons were incorporated into the management of the company, so that when he. Died in 1878 his sons continued his industrial activities. The eldest, also called Petrus, was to become notorious for his performance before the inquiry committee surveying the working conditions in Dutch industry in 1887. His cynical statements about the working conditions in his own factories shocked many people. The company name was changed to Petrus Regout & Co. In 1879 the image of the sphinx started to be used as a company mark and logo. Beginning in 1899 the company was called De Sphinx. In 1913, the peak year of the Maastricht potteries, Petrus Regout & Co. Employed about 7,000 people. This number comprised almost 70% of the town’s total industrial employment. In the following decades the companies ran into difficulties, finally resulting in a number of mergers after the Second World War. The most important of these was the merger of Sphinx and. Société Céramique de Maestricht. In 1958 the company merged with Société Ceramique and changed its name to N. Sphinx-Céramique, which, thanks to a royal decree, became Royal Sphinx in 1960. Sphinx stopped production of tableware in 1969. In 1994 the company was acquired by Swedish firm Gustavsberg and became NV Koninklijke Sphinx Gustavsberg. The Sphinx itself was bought in 1999 by the Finnish Sanitec. In 2010 the Maastricht plant was closed down and production moved to Swedish Sanitec plant. For this reason, these particular lines are seldom found for sale outside of Holland and Asia (especially India, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia). Lusterware is a type of pottery with a metallic glaze that gives the effect of iridescence, which is produced by metallic oxides in an overglaze finish and given a second firing at a lower temperature in a reduction kiln that excludes oxygen. This pattern is known as Goudkust, which is Dutch for Gold Coast. The bowl is well-marked with Societe Ceramique’s printed shopmark with a rearing lion and also shows an impressed number used to indicate size. The transfer pattern is intricate, include a border, heart motifs, and Greek Key-like elements. The condition of this item is very good, but several hairlines are visible on the bottom and side of the bowl. Please see the photos for more details on decoration and condition. The last photo shows the complete collection of five Maastricht bowls in varying sizes, all in copper luster glazes. The bulk of my collection is Danish stoneware from the 1920s into the 1970s. The bulk of my Danish collection consists of Arne Bang, Saxbo, Jais Nielsen, Nils Thorsson, Erik Hjorth, and Ejvind Nielsen. I have done extensive research on these and other artists and workshops and would be happy to share that with interested buyers. My second largest collection consists of European tableware from the mid-late 19th century to pre-WWII 20th century, and encompass hand-painted (stick spatter), flow blue, and other transfer ware patterns. The patterns I collect are primarily from Holland (Maastricht), but also include English, Swedish, Belgian, Danish and German makers. In addition to stoneware and dinnerware, I have a modest collection of Danish Art Deco metalware from the workshop of Just Andersen. Over the coming months I will be listing a wide range of pieces from my collection, including a selection of metalwork by Just Andersen in light bronze, pewter, and Disko metal, as well as tableware from Dutch and English factories. Beautiful Hispano Moresque large bowl with classic griffin depicted in the center, surrounded by scrolling copper designs and a blue band below the edge. I believe this is a revival piece from the 1920s. Gorgeous and dramatic piece! A little information on the history of Hispano Moresque : This is one of the first pieces I have come across, and it was very exciting to learn about a new and beautiful type of ceramic art! Tin-glazed, lustered earthenware made by Moorish potters in Spain, chiefly at Malaga in the 15th century, and in the region of Manises, near Valencia, in the 16th century. The tin glaze was applied over a design usually traced in cobalt blue; after the first firing, the lustre, a metallic pigment, was applied by brush over the tin glaze, and the piece was fired again. The effect varies from a pale yellow iridescence in early pieces to a coarser, copperish iridescence in late work. Early designs are Islamic: the. Palm motifs, and Arabic inscriptions, for example. Later designs combine Islamic and Italian Renaissance motifs. Misspelled or intentionally illegible Arabic inscriptions indicate that the work was taken over by Spanish Christian craftsmen. Imitation of this p. In Italy led to the development of Italian majolica ware. Eugene White pieces were produced from 1942 – 1948. This beautiful terra-cotta bowl has a wonderful hand-hammered lid. The bowl is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. The bowl does have crazing throughout – but Eugene made most of his pieces with a decorative crackle glaze so this piece probably came out of his studio this way. Other than that here are no chips or cracks to the bowl. The underside of the bowl is inscribed with “Eugene White California” in script. This bowl measures 13 3/4″ in diameter and is 2 5/8″ high from flat surface (table) to rim. The lid is hand-hammered with a piece of glazed ceramic as the handle – trapped by a copper strap riveted to the lid with 2 tiny copper studs. I have not touched the copper in terms of cleaning so you have a vintage patina! Don’t let this piece pass you by – particularly if you live in Arts & Crafts / Craftsman home!
