Item being offered is a vintage Native American Hopi made painted red clay pottery bowl. This is a solid pice with a good weight to it despite its small size. The designs painted onto the bowl are traditional hopi designs. The bowl is signed Clarice 16-50 on the bottom. Hopi potters draw on a tradition going back centuries. The ancestors of the Hopi made gray utility ware as long ago as A. The ancient potters developed black on white styles, black on red, and finally polychromes. In the late 1800s, outsiders began to appreciate the artistry of Hopi potters. This new demand sparked what has been called the revival period for Hopi pottery. The ancient potters passed their skills on to succeeding generations, many of whom are Hopi potters today. Although First Mesa is the most well-known for its pottery, Hopi potters can be found throughout the Hopi mesas. All authentic Hopi pottery is handmade by the coil and scrape technique. Hopi potters do not use a pottery wheel or make mold-poured pottery. They use the same techniques as their ancestors, hand-painting the designs with yucca leaf brushes and using natural materials provided by their environment. The pots are then fired in open firing areas. Measurements Height: 2.25″ inches Diameter: 3.10″ inches Condition: Excellent ; no chipping, scratches, paint still looks good but has very small amount of fading from age. Vintage Pauline Setalla Signed Hopi Clay Bowl. I have listed a very old vintage Pauline Setalla clay bowl, most likely prior to the 1960′s. This may be one of her earliest pots as it has both the Hopi dwelling and paw drawings. It appears that she misspelled her name, missing the T in her name (not sure why). Both A’s are capitalized in her name. It appears in her more recent creations that her name has lower case a’s. The bowl shows its age as the painted surface does show wear. The signature and drawings are faint due to the age. The bowl measures a little over 6. The opening is 3″ and the height is about 4″. Also, there is a what appears to be a penciled mark on the bottom, 125. It’s very faint, just above the signature. There are no chips, cracks or repairs.
