Rare Vintage MCM Myrton Purkiss Ceramic Studio Bowl Stunning! This is a gorgeous example of noted mid century modern ceramicist Myrton Purkiss sought after studio work. Decorated/glazed in Purkiss inimitable style, the bowl is an era-appropriate pale yellow/chartreuse with black accents, and is in fine condition with no chips or cracks. Weighing appx 2 lbs, this beauty is an impressive 11.5 in diameter, with the center, sunken bowl portion 7 diameter. It is 2 high. Purkiss work is difficult to find, especially in as fine condition as this piece. An outstanding example of mid 20. Century artistry and décor. Myrton Purkiss moved from Canada to the United States at 12 years old and eventually attended the University of Southern California to study under master ceramist Glen Lukens, who influenced generations of ceramic students with his groundbreaking experimentation in materials and techniques. Purkiss completed his formal education at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles before being drafted into military service, where he used his design skills working as a cartographer, building scale models of the European landscape. He took advantage of this time abroad, studying ceramics and decorative arts across England and France. He immersed himself in his craft, throwing functional vessels that he hand painted with beautiful and complex geometric patterns. In the mid-1950s, Purkiss permanently closed his studio and turned to a career inl andscape architecture. Despite this career change, his work remains an important example of the way that twentieth century artists blended the elements of decorative arts, craft, and fine art. VERY RARE WELLER AME RI CAN ARTS & CRAFTS SIGNED EARLY 20TH CENTURY ANTIQUE CERAMIC FROG BOWL, W/GREEN, BONE WHITE & METALLIC BURNT SIENNA MOTTLED GLAZE DEPICTING A FROG PERCHED ON THE EDGE OF A POND NEXT TO A BLOOMING WATER LILLY. Weller antique Ame ri can Arts & Crafts figurative art pottery and ceramic vessels. 11 ¼ Length x 7. ¾” Depth x 4″ Height including the frog x 2 ½ Height (Bowl). Extremely rare and in simply outstanding, estate fresh condition. Not only are these early 20th century antique Weller Ame ri can Arts & Crafts hand decorated ceramic’frog bowls’ hard to find, but to encounter one in this kind of extremely well-preserved condition, is well, almost simply too much to ask. A plaything and personal artifact of the gods. Gorgeous and an exquisite, nearly unparalleled antique Weller piece of Ame ri can Arts & Crafts ceramic art. Incredible glaze, figuration and surfaces make this a memorable, extraordinary work of antique Ame ri can ceramic art. One magnificent, killer bowl. Clearly signed on the base plate with a black ink Weller Pottery maker’s mark stamp. The small episode of bone white ceramic glaze loss on the base plate to the right and top of the Weller Pottery black ink stamp, is the only noticeable, fairly significant instance of appreciable damage to the dish. No attempt has been made to rectify or to correct this condition issue or to professionally restore this affected area. We decided to leave it exactly as we found it where it was discovered in the South Shore Massachusetts estate where it had been, largely undisturbed and perhaps forgotten, for years and years, apparently with only one previous owner. God created bowls and then God created bowls for Himself. Very Good to Excellent overall antique condition. Please scroll down the page and view enlarged photos below.
