This is a sensational Santa Clara Black Ribbed Melon Bowl Pottery Vintage 1970s by HELEN SHUPLA (d-1985). Helen Shupla was one of the few potters whose name had become synonymous with a particular style of pottery – the Melon Bowl. This is of her classic black melon jar bowl. It has 19 ribs and it is beautifully polished and fired to a lustrous black. The highly polished surface and the various angles of the ribs result in a striking appearance as the light enhances the form. Measures approx 5 1/2″ tall with 6″ diameter. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. Any blemishes in pic are reflections, not on the bowl. Signed by the famous Santa Clara potter. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. A fabulous piece to start your Santa Clara pottery collection! The ribs on these pieces are pushed out from the inside when the clay is wet. That is why there is often a slight turn to the ribs, as they are turned when she would twist her hand against the inside of the clay. As they are based on a natural form they tend to have a very organic appearance. Her work can be found in museums such as the Heard Museum and the Denver Art Museum. In 1978 Helen won a first prize at Indian Market in Santa Fe for a melon bowl, something she repeated the following year. In 1984, however, her wedding vase took First Prize at Indian Market in Santa Fe. Helens melon jars are visually beautiful, wonderful to hold and a testament to the ingenuity of an artist! The mid section of the jar is slipped in micaceous clay in matte finish and incised with rectangular sections leaning against each other. Measures approx 4″ tall x 6″ wide. Signed by the renown Santa Clara potter. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. Born in 1962, Linda is the granddaughter of Santa Clara Pueblo pottery matriarch Margaret Tafoya and the daughter of Lee and Betty Tafoya. While her pottery continued in a Santa Clara style, she also began to design pieces that were influenced by traditional San Juan imagery.
