For your consideration is a vintage 1960′s Italian art pottery pedestal compote centerpiece bowl. An import for Rosenthal -Netter who commissioned and imported decorative pottery to the United States from Ceramica Bitossi in Italy, this piece was designed and created by Bitossi’s famed Master Ceramicist, Aldo Londi. Part of Londi’s “Thai Silk” line, the centerpiece is the classic “Remini Blue” in color accented with contrasting chartreuse green and decorated with gold metallic enhancements. Standing approximately 9″ in height on a dramatic attached conical stand, the bowl is substantial in size measuring 10″ in diameter. Very light uniform crazing, inherently common in these pieces, is present on the bowls interior but has not darkened with the passage of time and is difficult to capture in photographic images. Otherwise the bowl is in remarkable vintage condition with no chips, cracks, damages, prior repairs, or other compromising imperfections found. Wear is commensurate for age and history of gentle well cared for use, so please regard the photos as they form a descriptive part of the listing. A fabulous and highly collectible piece of mid-century Italian art pottery that will be a crown jewel in any collection. All questions are welcome and encouraged to ensure complete satisfaction. Aquarium for Chinese Box Turtles. When filled with about a 1/2 of water the 3 lotus blossoms become’islands’ for the small aquatic turtles to climb, play & rest. The Imperial yellow interior wall stands 2 tall and is decorated with floral & fauna (Chinese box turtle food). Was this presented (with live turtles) to a 18th century Chinese monarch? It’s possible this is a brush washer but most brush washers measure about 5 across. At 14 across it is unusually large and, if an artist’s brush washer, it’s the most elaborate brush washer in all of Chinese history! Again, suggesting royal connections. Hand pottered, hand incised and hand painted. It looks like there was a traditional Chinese squared-off block signature on the bottom but it is no longer readable (see pic 9 above). We’re not sure what we have here but it’s clearly something special! It appears to be the one and only example of this form which might suggest a’fantasy’ piece. The unreadable signature is suspicious: it’s recessed, so why is it worn away? The darkened bottom also concerns us. Wiping the bottom of a piece of pottery with a dark stain is a modern technique to make a piece look “antique”. But, because of the box, we are fairly certain this piece is at least 100yrs old and we don’t believe 100yrs ago people were staining bottoms to make them look older? Maybe the darkening is natural? Another observation is that the bowl is in excellent condition but the aged brocade box shows many years of wear. And the wear is authentic. Someone has handled, opened and closed this box many 1000s of times. This bowl was repeatedly brought out for use or display. Under what circumstances would that happen? !
