Fine and nice thin walled high quality pottery Hopi small dough / serving bowl. Made of all hand coiled native clay and sheep dung fired in the traditional way and painted with vegetal paints, with a hand made yucca brush this pot is as nice as can be and very typical of her work. Pauline Setalla (1930 -), married into the Frog Woman/Feather Woman families. Pauline Talasyousia married Justin Navasie Setalla, and Pauline learned to make pottery when she was immersed in the Navasie family. It was reported by her son that she is in ill health and has retired from making pottery. She had 10 children, some of whom are potters carrying on her legacy. She was raised on the village of Mishongovi on the Hopi Reservation. She learned pottery production techniques from her mother-in-law, Agnes Navasie, and her sister-in-law, Eunice Navasie. HER POTTERY APPEARS IN MANY PROMINENT PUBLIC AND PRIVATE COLLECTIONS including the Smithsonian, Heard, and Peabody. She has shown in Santa Fe and Santo Domingo. Emma Naha, active since 1970, black and red on orange seed jars, wedding vases, favorite designs are parrots and has been published in Bassman 1997. She is noted for making fine small seed jars with Sikyatki designs. Her clay fires to a warm orange hue. (Source Schaaf, Hopi-Tewa Pottery, 500 Artist Biographies). The design is a classic bird tail pattern with other traditional design elements. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, Emma Naha. Measures 3 1/2″ high x 4″ diameter. Vernida Polacca Nampeyo b. 1955 is a great-granddaughter of Nampeyo of Hano and a granddaughter of Fannie Nampeyo through her father, Harold Polacca. She is a sister of noted potters Clinton Polacca and Reva Ami. Vernida is known for her finely painted traditionally designed Hopi pottery. This bowl is painted with bee-weed and clay slips for additional color. The design is a classic eagle tail pattern that extends from the mouth to the shoulder. The bowl was traditionally fired which resulted in the color variations on the surface. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, Vernida Polacca Nampeyo. Measures 3 1/4″ high x 4 1/2″ diameter.
