This is a vintage two-piece serving bowl set made of clay by Master Potter Ben Owen. The set includes a large bean pot with a tobacco spit brown color and solid pattern. It was handmade and produced using pottery techniques with an impressed backstamp. Please see all photos I will consider all offers.
The ceramic bowl is cylindrical in shape. The brown clay body is glazed in mottled shades of green over a pale blue with a deep brown coloration surrounding the bottom and the outer base rim. Signed on bottom “Harding Black 1958″. The bowl measures 4 1/16″ in height, 7 7/8″ in diameter at the upper rim and 2 11/16 in diameter at the base. SHE ALSO SERVED AS PRESIDENT OF THE CLARA DRISCOLL CHAPTER OF THE DAUGHTERS OF THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS AND AS PRESIDENT OF THE OLD BAYVIEW CHAPTER OF THE NATIONAL SOCIETY UNITED STATES DAUGHTERS OF 1812.

A well listed and noted mid-century studio potter, Don Johns worked in Illinois and later in North Carolina, passing away in 2017. Worked in a variety of mid-century studio styles, including Brutalist. This piece dates from the mid to late 60′s. Note the pantyhose ad he somehow impressed into the clay – those became the latest thing in the age of the mini skirt in the mid 60s. Note also the fashionable women dressed in that period’s style. The free form rolled out clay with a dark rustic border and the rustic feet echo the brutalist movement, while the lighter hues of the top, along with nods to popular culture may have been a transition piece for Johns.
