Tribe: Santa Clara Pueblo. Pottery Construction: Hand Coiled. Type of Pottery: Small Bowl. Firing Method: Outdoor Wood Fireplace. Era: Contemporary (1980s- present). Age: Circa 1980s- early 2000s. Denise Chavarria continues inthe path of her grandmother, Teresita Naranjo, and her mother, Stella Chavarria, making traditional black on black pottery for which Santa Clara is well-known. Clay near the pueblo isgathered, cleaned and prepared. Thetraditional hand coiling method is used to create the shape of the pot. It isfired in an outdoor pit and hand polished. Since the 1990s Denise hasparticipated in and won awards at the Santa Fe Indian Market, the New MexicoState Fair and the Eight Northern Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show. This pot has a dramaticcarved swirl around the entire body of the highly polished pot. This beautiful bowl by Annie Baca. It is an original piece of Santa Clara traditional hand-coiled and hand carved pottery. It features a wonderful design of a Water Serpent wrapped around the pottery. The surface is about as fine polished as you can get. It is signed on the base Annie, Santa Clara Pueblo. It’s a fine example of Baca’s work and sure to be a highlight in any southwestern pottery collection – it is in excellent condition with no damage or repairs. It measures 2 1/2″ tall x 3 1/8″ across. Annie Baca (born 1941) is a daughter of noted potter Cresencia Tafoya (1918-99) and Carmilita Tafoya. She is sister to Harriet Tafoya, Pauline Martinez and Mark Tafoya. Baca is known for her small pots with highly polished surfaces and finely painted designs. Vintage 1973 Margaret Tafoya carved redware pottery bowl in very good, used condition. The bottom is marked in pencil Margaret Tafoya Santa Clara 1973. Bowl measures 6″ in diameter and 2 1/4″ high. Overall a very nice piece, shows some wear (see photos); there are no chips but there is a 1 hairline crack descending from the rim–should be visible in the last photo.
