WELCOME TO MY PRIVATE MUSEUM! FINE & UNIQUE ITEMS HAND SELECTED FOR THEIR RARITY. PLEASE VIEW MY OTHER AUCTIONS TO SEE MORE OF MY TRULY SPECIAL PIECES OF GENUINE ANTIQUE-VINTAGE & FINE ESTATE JEWELRY, ELEGANT OLD SILVER & OTHER HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE RARITIES! PLEASE KNOW THAT THERE ARE MANY PRODUCTION FLAWS THROUGHOUT THIS ONE OF A KIND HAND MADE AND HAND SCULPTED VINTAGE 1950′S ERA POTTERY ARTWORK THAT WAS MADE BY LIVIA GORKA IN HUNGARY. THESE FLAWS ARE ALL CAUSED BY THE TYPES OF PIGMENTS, GLAZE, KILM AND FIRING PROCESS USED BY THE ARTIST WHEN IT WAS CREATED. THERE ARE NO ACTUAL DAMAGES AS THE ARTIST INTENTIONALLY CRAFTED HER WARES TO SHOW THAT THEY WERE MADE BY HAND AND THAT THESE NATURAL OCCURRING FLAWS ARE PART OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF HER POTTERY. HOWEVER, THERE ARE OTHERS THAT RESELMBLE ROUGHNESS, BLOTCHYNESS, VARIATION IN COLOR AND GLAZE THAT ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO CAPTURE WITH A CAMERA. I ONLY MENTION THESE UNAVOIDABLE AND NOW, CHARMING DESIGN FEATURES FOR THOSE UNFAMILIAR WITH HER POTTERY OR THE PROCESSES INVOLVED IN THE CREATION OF VINTAGE HAND CRAFTED WARES THAT WERE MADE WITH VERY LIMITED AVAILABLE MATERIALS IN COMMUNIST OCCUPIED HUNGARY WELL OVER 1/2 A CENTURY AGO. THANK YOU, BERNICE ELLEN. A VERY RARE, UNIQUE AND EXCEPTIONALLY HAND DECORATED VINTAGE (CIRCA 1950′s) MODERNIST ERA ALMOST 10 INCH 25 CENTIMETERS LONG TRI-FOOTED, BLACK, WHITE, TURQUOISE TRIMMED AND YELLOW UNDERSIDED, CUBIST STYLED, HEAD OF AN EAGLE PATTERNED, PAINTED AND INCISED (CARVED) TRAY, DISH, PLATTER, LOW BOWL OR OBLONG PLATE BY THE HIGHLY IMPORTANT HUNGARIAN CERAMICIST AND POTTER; LIVIA GORKA 1925 – 2010. THIS OUTSTANDING AND LARGER SIZED EXAMPLE IS IN EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION WITH NO CHIPS AND NO CRACKS WITH ONLY THE TINIEST BIT OF MICROSCOPIC CRAZING ALONG WITH A SMALL AREA NEAR THE UNDERSIDE’S EDGE THAT WAS NOT GLAZED AN ORIGINAL ASPECT CAUSED DURING THE ARTIST’S CREATION AND NOT A DAMAGE. THERE ARE NUMEROUS ADDITIONAL IMPERFECTIONS THAT OCCURIED DURING HER MAKING OF THIS ALL OF WHICH ARE COMMONLY FOUND AS COMMUNIST OCCUPIED HUNGARY WAS QUITE A REPRESSED COUNTRY, SUPPLIES WERE LIMITED AND ARTISTS OFTEN WORKED ONLY WITH WHAT FEW MATERIALS WERE AVAILABLE OR ANY THEY COULD CREATE THEMSELVES WHICH OFTEN CAUSED QUALITY CONTROL ISSUES WIT THE FINISHED WORKS. IT’S CERTAINLY EVIDENCE THAT THIS WAS CREATED BY HER HANDS! THE BOTTOM (IN THE CENTER BETWEEN THE THREE LEGS) BEING FULLY SIGNED UNDER THE GLAZE WITH HER INITIALS OF; gl” AND “Hungary (IN SCRIPT). HE HAD BEEN HIGHLY INVOLVED IN THE HUNGARIAN ART MOVEMENT AND TRAVELED THERE OFTEN BRINGING BACK MANY WONDROUS PIECES OF ART, SCULPTURE AND POTTERY FOR AMERICAN COLLECTORS. I FELT SO PRIVILAGED TO BE ABLE TO ACQUIRE THESE PIECES, AT A REASONABLE PRICE BACK THEN, SIMPLY BECAUSE MY HUSBAND AND I HAD BEEN VERY KIND TO HIM AND HIS WIFE. I ONLY WROTE THEM A FEW TIMES AFTER THEY LEFT OUR NEIGHBORHOOD BUT HAVE ALWAYS HAD THESE ARTISTIC CREATIONS AS A REMEBERENCE OF OUR FRIENDSHIP. THIS INTRIGUING HIGHLY CUBIST STYLED TRI-FOOTED PLATTER IS QUITE EXTRAORDINARY WITH ITS EAGLE’S HEAD MOTIF AND A MARVELOUS EXAMPLE OF MISS GORKE’S ARTISTIC TALLENTS. IT IS ALSO ABOUT 6 INCHES WIDE AT ITS WIDEST POINT AND BECAUSE IT IS FOOTED AND HAS UPWARD SHAPED ENDS, IT IS ALMOST 2.75 INCHES TALL AT ONE END AND JUST SHY OF 2 INCHES TALL AT THE OTHER END. THIS HAS A WONDERFUL BOLD AND STRIKINGLY CLASSIC COLOR COMBINATION THAT IS IDEAL FOR THE CUBIST PATTERN MAKING IT A GREAT EXAMPLE OF THIS HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER ARTIST’S UNIQUE ONE OF A KIND CREATIONS. I HOPE YOU SHALL CHERISH AND APPRECIATE THIS JUST AS I HAVE FOR THE PAST MANY DECADES. IT’S A SPECTACULAR PIECE OF MID CENTURY HUNGARIAN ART POTTERY THAT WILL SURELY BE ENJOYED FOR GENERATIONS. (Nógrádverce, 5 March, 1925 4 August, 2011). Took a certificate as master potter in 1947. Her master was her father, Géza Gorka. A free-lancing artist, she worked in the Gorka workshop in Verce until 1959, and in her own studio since then. The source of her art is nature, her typical objects are large asymmetrical vessels, idols, fish, birds, stones. She adopted the pre-wheel archaic technique of working in clay. Creates unique artefacts, prefers series and groups of objects. Makes high-fired items of her own clay bodies, often stoneware. She uses oxide-glaze, combines clay with metals frequently. The palette of her works of powerful plasticity is reserved. Member of the Association of Hungarian Artist (1956), The Hungarian Art Fund later MAOE (1955) and IAC, Genf. The marks of Gorka Livia.
