This beautiful bowl by Annie Baca. It is an original piece of Santa Clara traditional hand-coiled and hand carved pottery. It features a wonderful design of a Water Serpent wrapped around the pottery. The surface is about as fine polished as you can get. It is signed on the base Annie, Santa Clara Pueblo. It’s a fine example of Baca’s work and sure to be a highlight in any southwestern pottery collection – it is in excellent condition with no damage or repairs. It measures 2 1/2″ tall x 3 1/8″ across. Annie Baca (born 1941) is a daughter of noted potter Cresencia Tafoya (1918-99) and Carmilita Tafoya. She is sister to Harriet Tafoya, Pauline Martinez and Mark Tafoya. Early Angela Baca Melon bowl with 24 ribs, signed on bottom “Angela Baca Santa Clara”. Measures 4.5″ Tall, 6″ Wide. Angela, who was born in 1927 and had been potting since 1955, had undoubtedly one of the longest active potting careers in Santa Clara Pueblo. She was the daughter of Severa Tafoya, one of the better known potters of the middle 20th century. Angela was a melon pot specialist making various sizes in both red and black. She had three children, David, Alvin and Leona, who also make nothing but melon pots. One could say that Angela was the matriarch of the First Family of Santa Clara melon pots.
