1956 Harding Black Studio Pottery Red Bowl. Outstanding Harding Black bowl in the simplest form, but the glaze is what makes this piece special. I believe it to be an example of his famous Copper Red or Copper Oxide glaze-but you be the judge. It’s a deep, gorgeous color. The rim is almost white and overall, it has a black crackle effect. The glaze is a bit mottled on the underside. Please see all photos as they can show the nuances of this bowl better than I can describe them. A truly beautiful example of this pioneer potter’s earlier work! Measures: 7.5″ diameter and sits about 2.125″ tall. Condition: Excellent, original condition, unaltered, with some inherent imperfections, but no damage to note. Signed and dated on the underside. Most notably, he made functional stoneware pots fired in a high-fire, reduction atmosphere kiln, (he also worked in mid-range fired earthenware), and is known for his extensive glaze research. As a self-taught chemist, he masterfully reproduced ancient Chinese and Oriental glazes, sharing his knowledge and formulas freely. Considered a pioneer of modern handmade pottery in Texas, Harding Black’s work with clay serves as an important bridge between the contrasting styles of early Texas, and mid-century pottery. In 1932 he began teaching children’s ceramics classes at the Witte Museum, San Antonio, Texas. Black retired from teaching in 1956 to devote his time completely to making ceramics as a studio potter. He retired in 1997. This item is in the category “Pottery & Glass\Decorative Cookware, Dinnerware & Serveware\Bowls”. The seller is “omniavintage” and is located in this country: US. Harding Black Ashtray Bowl Ash Tray Vintage Pottery 6.5 Wide X 1.5 Tall. No chips or cracks however the glaze show an abundant amount of crazing and tobacco stains on the cigar cradles. Signed Harding Black 1957. It appears Harding Black May have had a studio at the museum where he taught pottery and glazing techniques. This is a used piece with tobacco stains so very possible that it was used in his studio at one point or another. I do not smoke and has never been used by me as an ashtray. I cannot smell the tobacco aroma on this piece but if you are sensitive to the smell and interested I suggest you skip on this as it is a used piece. Please look closely at the photos for condition and feel free to ask any questions.
