This is a beautiful vintage vessel that is hand-coiled polychrome pottery bowl crafted by Mae Mutz, a highly talented and accomplished Hopi-Tewa Pueblo artist. Active Period: She was active in the Native American art marketplace from roughly 1960 until 1983. Her work is preserved in institutional collections, such as the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian. Experts note that Mutz was particularly celebrated for her exquisite use of negative space and her exceptional skill at forming bowls. Her work typically sets complex, hand-painted motifs against stark, beautifully finished plain backgrounds. Traditional Materials: The bowl is created using classic Hopi yellow/buff clay, meticulously smoothed, slips-coated, and hand-painted with dark mineral pigments and warm reddish-orange clay slips.
