At 14 across it is unusually large and, if an artist’s brush washer, it’s the most elaborate brush washer in all of Chinese history! Again, suggesting royal connections. Hand pottered, hand incised and hand painted. It looks like there was a traditional Chinese squared-off block signature on the bottom but it is no longer readable (see pic 9 above). We’re not sure what we have here but it’s clearly something special! It appears to be the one and only example of this form which might suggest a’fantasy’ piece. The unreadable signature is suspicious: it’s recessed, so why is it worn away? The darkened bottom also concerns us. Wiping the bottom of a piece of pottery with a dark stain is a modern technique to make a piece look “antique”. But, because of the box, we are fairly certain this piece is at least 100yrs old and we don’t believe 100yrs ago people were staining bottoms to make them look older? Maybe the darkening is natural? Another observation is that the bowl is in excellent condition but the aged brocade box shows many years of wear. And the wear is authentic. Someone has handled, opened and closed this box many 1000s of times. This bowl was repeatedly brought out for use or display. Under what circumstances would that happen? ! Measures about 14″ across the rim and stands 3″ high.
