A rare find: These three nesting oval casserole bowls are an incredible example of pre-1950s touristware from Mexico. Likely made in the Guadalajara area, perhaps by the Tlaquepaque artist known as “Yellow Brick Road, ” but certainly by one of the pottery town’s top makers — the detail on the charro rider and his galloping horse on the largest bowl is very well done. It is an image of a horse and rider that I have seen on only one other tourist ware-era piece. Experts in this type of pottery, one a collector, the other a curator, say they are remarkable, special pieces. The medium bowl has a wonderful fishing scene reminiscent of fishermen on Lake Chapala near Guadalajara, and the smallest bowl has a full-face figure, rarely seen in tourist ware, with charming facial details. The colors are vivid, blue, green and yellow reflective of the glazes used in pre-1950s tourist ware, and there are no chips or marks — the white in the photos is light reflection, not scratches. The glaze has a pebble texture in some places on the pathways, echoing old cobblestones. These are really unique pieces and are in great condition having been very well cared for over the years. Very lightweight, which indicates their age, and still well-glazed. No marks, chips or fleabites. The largest bowl is 14.5 inches long and 9.5 inches wide. The middle one is 11 inches wide and 8 inches across. The smallest one is 9 inches across and 6.75 inches wide. They stand two inches high. They have a raised stamp on the back Made in Mexico. Of course, these will be double-boxed and well-packed since they are fragile.
