Proudly presented today is this lovely Hopi Sikyatki Style shallow bowl. Measuring 5 and a half inches in diameter and 2 inches tall, it was created around 1900, and depicts a stylized eagle and a bear claw. It also displays a spirit line, the spiritual gap in the framing line that allows the potter’s spirit to escape from the jar when it is complete. It dates from the early stages of the Hopi pottery revival, and was made by a contemporary of Nampeyo. It is of course far to old for a signature, although it was obviously someone well-versed in the Sikyatki Revival Style. The piece shows almost no wear, and has a beautiful patina of age. Hopi Pottery, Vintage, Large Traditional Polychrome Sikyatki Revival Design Bowl, Signed Violet Huma. This is a vintage thick wall piece. Is cited in Gregory Schaaf’s 500 artist bio. She was the mother of Anita Polacca. She is a renowned master potter. Her pieces are highly sought after and held in the finest of collections. This piece has nice warm fire clouding. Her pieces are fairly rare, this bowl is an excellent example of her finer work. Very good condition considering the age, as I estimate somewhere around 50 years old. The interior of this bowl is a variation of the bird hanging from sky band design of Sikyatki origin that Nampeyo often used from the early the 1890s until her blindness left her unable to paint in the 1920s. From the windswept Hopi mesas in northern Arizona, a classic old Hopi Indian bowl, measuring 9 inches in diameter at the rim by 2 inches deep. Painted in classic Sikyatki Revival style with abstracted feather and bird motifs and bear claws. The Sikyatki Revival style was developed by early Hopi potter Nampeyo in the 1890′s and has been carried on by her descendants and other potters to this day. There are no chips or cracks. The orange-red Hopi clay has fired a dark red, almost brown color. This bowl was made circa 1940′s to 1960′s. Addresses (48 states only). The Scottsdale AZ contemporary artist Mike Hawley ha d been creating pottery in the old Hopi Sikyatki style since the 19 70s. Mike Hawleys pottery are not imitations of ancient pottery, they are instead modern works of art which have original designs inspired by those on ancient Hopi ceramics. He call ed these “Chapkot ewa Polychrome” pottery, named after his adopted Hopi name. This great contemporary artist of Old Hopi Sikyatki pottery style passed away on April 24, 2012. Only hand-ground clay dug on Antelope Mesa on the Hopi Reservation was used to coil, shape, polish, paint and coal fire this pot in a firing pit the artist constructed himself. All of his pigments were made by hand from minerals and plants indigenous to the Hopi Mesas and each of his painted design is original and within the Sikyatki design tradition. This absolutely beautiful hand coiled pottery bowl is in very good condition with minor surface flaws on the lower outer bowl.
