Vintage Joel Huntley Columbus Wisconsin pottery piece, a large deep plate, platter, charger or bowl, Sgraffito redware bird tulips, thistle and 1776 Gottfried Aust Anno decorating the rim. Measures 12 1/4″ across the rim x 1 7/8″ tall. Back states: J+D Huntley EA Wisconsin Pottery Columbus, WI. Inscribed quote by Charles Kingsley: Do the work that is nearest though it’s dull at whiles. Helping when you meet them. Lame dogs over stiles. This piece shows light signs of having been displayed. I do not see any major wear or damage. There is purposeful crazing, and imperfections to the glaze to make it appear to be an old, well worn piece. Joel’s pieces are often one of a kind, and ornately decorated taking from colonial patterns and designs, and he almost always adds quotes or notations on the back to signify a meaningful quote, event or even how the weather is that particular day.
