Vintage Mexican Tonala Hand Burnished Globular Tecomate Form Bowl – C. The bowl features a flowering plant/cactus motif design. The vessel type is known as a tecomate (“gourd”), named after the gourds that inspired their original form. Some of the earliest ceramic vessels in Mesoamerica took the form of gourds captured in the more durable material of fired clay. Tecomates were important receptacles for community feasts, and many were subsequently placed in burials as important funerary offerings. Dimensions: 3.5″H x 4.625″Dia. Condition: Very good condition. This slightly oblong bowl measures 8-8 3/4 across x 7 1/2 tall. This pottery bowl is substantial in weight. In very good overall condition. No chips or cracks, no repairs. Minor paint and glaze loss. Vintage set of six handmade rustic, primitive Mexican redware clay, handled nesting bowls. The color is a lovely rusty reddish brown, natural glaze, and aged patina. Terracotta bowls should only be used for dry-goods and never touched with liquids. The largest bowl has two handles; all others have one handle. Largest bowl is 3.75″ tall (slightly taller at handles), and 9.25″ wide (slightly wider at handles). Smallest bowl is 1.75″ tall, and 3.875″ wide.
