Vintage McCarty’s Pottery bowl in a stunning Cobalt blue glaze with some white and flecks of mauve. Unique shape–not completely round but slightly pinched in on two sides so it forms a symmetrical ovoid shape. Measures 9 inches across on the shorter side and 10 inches across on the longer side, and about 3 1/4 to 3 1/2 inches tall. Signed McCarty on the underside (those are not chips on the underside–just where there isn’t glaze). Dates to about 1990. No damage, chips or loss. Lee and Pup McCarty began making their famous pottery in 1954 concentrating on both artistic and functional pieces. Platters, casserole dishes, lamps, hanging planters, dinnerware and a large variety of sculptures are among pieces adorning homes across America and the world. The McCartys’ unique style, again with the focus on the simple yet elegant, is one of the main reasons for the “collectability” of the pottery. Another reason is the glazes used in the firing process. In the 1950′s and 1960′s the McCartys experimented with native clays and glazes resulting in a wide variety of colors. By the 1970′s, they had invented their signature glazes of nutmeg brown, cobalt blue, and jade. McCarty’s pottery can be identified by the trademarked “river, ” a small black wavy line representing the Mississippi River on most functional pieces, and by the trademarked McCarty’s signature which is hand signed on the bottom or back of each piece. I’ll admit the newer clam shells are not my favorite McCartys pieces because the molds have lost a lot of the delicacy and detail of the older pieces. I don’t know the year this piece was made, but I believe it to have good age because of the clay color and because the mold is crisp and the scallops are deep and well-defined. Even the ribs in the shell are defined making it more realistic. This bowl has a stunning glaze with beautiful markings. It measures 11.5″ from tip to tip and is about 7″ wide.
