Rare matte green glazed Bauer “Indian” bowl. Terra cotta clay base. Marked 8 on bottom, denoting the size (medium/large). There are not many m. Atte green Indian bowls, which date from the 1910s. This example is particularly interesting and beautiful. Its variations in body and glaze (in the making) give the pot a handmade vibe, earthy and organic. For a few years in the early 1930s Bauer Pottery of Los Angeles would experiment again with glazes on its Indian bowls, by firing high gloss, intense colors on bisque bases. These striking “Art Deco” versions are also sought after, but the earlier “Arts and Crafts” versions of matte green glazed on terra cotta are far more scarce. MEASUREMENTS: 9.5″ wide (10″ if including the buttresses) x approx. CONDITION: Excellent and original. No cracks or restorations. As pictured, there are areas where the red clay shows through the glaze — this is original to the pot and makes it distinctive and individual. There are little bumps, pits, indents, and dimples to the body under the glaze — again, in the making of the pot. There are a couple of tiny inconsequential nicks to the glaze. The drainage hole is original (made at the factory). One of the photos here shows another Indian bowl in.
