An authentic piece of American mid-century modern pottery featuring a dramatic biomorphic freeform shape, glowing aqua interior, and heavily textured volcanic exterior. This is classic atomic-era design with strong space-age and organic modern influences. The exterior features a rugged lava glaze / volcanic glaze texture – sometimes also called. The rough matte exterior contrasts beautifully against the smooth glossy turquoise interior, a hallmark of upscale late-1950s and early-1960s decorative ceramics. Vintage Pigeon Forge Pottery Lava Glaze Bowl Brown Atomic Burst Ridge D Ferguson. Used but great condition. No chips or cracks. There’s a hole in the center. It may be used as a candle holder. There is some what looks like discoloring on top. See last picture for reference. I’m unsure if this was made while manufactured or not. Douglas Ferguson and his wife Ruth founded Pigeon Forge Pottery in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee in 1946. They organized their business so the pottery produced there would be high quality. At one point they employed 12 potters who would cast, glaze and fire stock items.

This is the largest serving bowl in the Atomic Starburst pattern by Franciscan. It is marked on the bottom: Franciscan Earthenware (in the center), Gladding McBean Co. Made in USA (in tiny print in a circle around the larger center mark). The bowl is not-quite-round; like other pieces in this pattern, the edges are higher in a couple places giving it sort of an abstract shape. I would call it round-ish. ” It measures 12″ in diameter in one direction, and 11.75 in the other. If you look at the photos, this will make sense! It is about 3 7/8 tall at the tallest sides. This bowl is in fantastic shape. Look at it — was it ever used? Big and deep — perhaps they never had enough guests over for dinner to use this largest of the Atomic Starburst bowls. It is very glossy and I don’t see any damage. This bowl is heavy (unwrapped it weighs nearly 4 lbs), and it will need a big box to protect it properly. It is physically impossible for me to cram in into a smaller box, so please don’t ask me to do that. This bowl has survived in great shape a long time, and it deserves TLC. The size and weight of the box, and the distance it has to travel from me to you, determine the cost. Thank you for looking. Franciscan STARBURST Atomic vintage pottery set. Complete serving set for four, with extra pieces as noted. Included in set are 7 dinner plates (2 with chip as shown in photo), 6 salad plates (2 with chip as shown on photo), I large serving platter, 1 divided serving bowl, I oval serving bowl, 2 mugs (no chips), 1 creamer (with chip on top edge as shown in photo). The dinner plates have been well used, glaze is worn and have small scratches on surface. All other pieces are in good shape with nice gloss finish. This would be a complete dinner table setting for 4 with a dinner plate, salad plate and small bowl. Includes the serving plater, divided bowl and oval bowl, all in good condition with no chips. Set does include the dinner and salad plates with small chips for extra settings if needed, so are including them in the complete set as shown.
