The pot has thin walls and feels wonderfully smooth to the touch. It shows a nicely painted polychrome design. I’m not sure, but the white double pointed design may represent prayer feathers and the area with stipling and a rectangular area underneath, may represent the pueblo village or fields. The symbols painted onto a Hopi pot are symbolic and almost always carry a message. The bowl measures 2 3/8″ high by 4 3/4″ across. There is some light scuffing to the paint, but overall this pot is in excellent vintage condition. This pot is signed by Nancy on the bottom. Modern Hopi potters make their pottery in the traditional manner. The clay is hand dug on the Hopi mesas and hand processed. The pots are carefully hand constructed using the coil and scrape techniques their ancestors taught them. The paints used are from naturally occurring materials. For example, black paint is made from Beeweed. The intricate and beautiful designs are painted free hand using a yucca leaf brush. The pots are then fired in the open air out on the mesa using sheep dung and cedar as a heat source. The Hopi Tribe is a sovereign nation located in northeastern Arizona and is made up of 12 villages on three mesas. The Hopi welcome to visitors on their website states: Since time immemorial the Hopi people have lived in Hopitutskwa and have maintained our sacred covenant with Maasaw, the ancient caretaker of the earth, to live as peaceful and humble farmers respectful of the land and its resources. Over the centuries we have survived as a tribe, and to this day have managed to retain our culture, language and religion despite influences from the outside world. New items will be listed every week. Our prices are better than wholesale. We guarantee all of our Native American Indian items to be AUTHENTIC American Indian traditional arts. VINTAGE SAN ILDEFONSO PUEBLO BLACKWARE POTTERY BOWL BY. ROSE CATA GONZALES (1900 – 1989). Being offered today is a vintage piece of blackware pottery created by Rose Cata Gonzales believed to date to the late 1930′s. The piece in very nice overall condition with no chips or cracks to the body. There are a few flea bites on the surface and mineral residue from the clay. Marked on the base with a strong “Rose” and remnant of a paper label. A relative said that the family had many vacations to the southwest in the early 1950′s. The bowl was wrapped in newspaper that crumbled away like onion skin when I discovered it. I believed that the white mineral salt dust on the surface may be an indication of clay that she used during a certain time period. As The Antique Roadshow says, “don’t clean anything unless you know”. It is a beauty. Rose w as originally from. Ohkay Owingeh (San Juan) Pueblo. In the 1920s, Rose learned first how to make polished blackware. Rose was credited as the innovator of deep carved pottery around 1930 at San Ildefonso. Dimensions: 4.75″ (12mm) width / 3.0″ (7.5mm) height. Item described as accurately as possible. Vintage ACOMA PUEBLO BOWL Pottery Signed by LUCY M. Lewis was from the Acoma Pueblo and was the last of the Acoma matriarchs. She was largely responsible for the revival of black and white designs on traditional handcoiled Acoma pottery. Many of these designs are more then 1000 years old. When creating her pottery, Lucy M. Lewis followed pueblo traditions in every step of her pottery making, from prayers during each step, handcoiling and outdoor firing of her pottery. Materials: Traditional , Hand coiled clay and traditional firing. Acoma clay has naturally high aluminum content so pottery can be made thinner walled yet still strong compared to the clay used for pottery of most AZ/NM region pueblos. This beautiful vase measures approx. 1-3/4″ H X 2-5/8″ DIAMETER. T is in really good condition with no cracks or repairs. There are a couple of very small chips as shown in pics. Not sure of it’s date but it was a part of an estate collection and has been collected for over 40 years. I have many others that I will be listing. SEE MY OTHER ITEMS. POTTERY, STERLING, STAR WARS. ACTION FIGURES, ZIPPO’S, STERLING PENS, GOLD FILLED. POLICE, MID CENTURY MODERN, AND MORE. The item “LUCY M.
