Vintage Richard Hieb Studio Art Pottery Bowl 15 California Artist Mid-century

Vintage Studio Pottery Bowl Description and Item Information Up for sale is this large, vintage, salt-glazed stoneware studio art pottery shallow bowl by the listed California artist, Richard Hieb. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This large, round piece is approximately 15 5/8 inches in diameter, and it is about 2 7/8 inches tall. Unpacked, it weighs over 5 1/4 pounds. The complex cobalt blue decoration contrasts nicely with the gray background; the underside is brown. This would be a fine and rare addition to a collection of vintage American studio ceramics. Identification This piece is by Richard Jacob Hieb of California. He is a listed artist in the Vasefinder online museum. The following information is from Vasefinder, and from the archives of the Lodi News Sentinel from the 1940s and 1950s. Richard Hieb was a student of Tony Prieto at Mills College in Oakland. During the mid-1950s, Hieb studied abroad in Japan. He was the apprentice of and studied for three years with master potter and important mingei folk art movement figure, Shoji Hamada. Hieb had a one man show in Kagashima, Japan. Hieb was a first prize winner at the 30th Annual Kingsley Art Club Exhibition at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. During the late 1950s, Hieb was vice president of the Lodi Ceramic Guild and president of the Lodi Art Club. He worked in salt-glazed stoneware and lustre-painted porcelanous clay. He admired Japanese pottery, saying, The work is not meticulous, nor is it cast with professional skill, but the conceptions of each piece are primitive and free of form. Besides pottery, Hieb also created prize-winning paintings and weavings. He received first prize for a weaving that was displayed at the 1948 Arts & Crafts Exhibition at the California State Fair. He exhibited at the Haggin Museum in Stockton, California, where he had a one man show in 1956, displaying salt glazed stoneware that he produced at Mills College. Hieb also exhibited at the Nationals from 1949 to 1951, and again in 1956. Condition This piece looks very good overall, with light wear, but no chips. While examining it under my bright photography lights, I found a very fine, 1 3/4 inch hairline; this does not detract. I owned this plate for more than a decade without noticing it. Some scattered, small extra clay bits to the interior are as made. Slight asymmetry in shape is also as made. Terms of Sale 1. Payments must be received within three days of the end of the listing, unless prior arrangements have been made. Some countries have restrictions or prohibitions on certain classes of merchandise. And international government regulations prohibit such behavior. Individual computers may display colors differently. This is a wonderful Pair, or Set of Two Handcrafted Vintage Mid-Century Modern Signed Studio Pottery Bowls.. Each bowl is signed, however the signatures vary slightly, these are obviously created by the same artist.. Bowls are primarily a dark brown in color with lighter colored decoration of circles and swirls, with a lighter colored speckled interior. We are uncertain who the artist is who handcrafted these pieces.. We estimate they most likely date to the 1970′s era but do not have definitive information regarding their exact age. One bowl measures approximately 5 1/2″ tall by 10″ top diameter and about 3 3/8 diameter at the base.. The second bowl measures approximately 6″ tall by 9 1/2″ top diameter with a 2 3/4 diameter base. Condition is good with minor wear expected and commensurate with Vintage pieces.. There are no chips or cracks in these bowls.. There are some minor scrapes on the inside of each bowl, this most likely occurred when one bowl may have been stacked inside the other. Please view all photos carefully as they are considered part of the item description. Vintage Myrton Purkiss Studio Pottery Bowl Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage studio art pottery bowl by the listed California artist, Myrton Purkiss. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This bowl has abstract decoration to its interior, with a white crackle glazed background; the exterior has a gray finish. This piece stands approximately 2 inches tall; it has a rim diameter of about 9 3/8 inches. Unpacked, it weighs 2 pounds 2.0 ounces. It has a hanging wire on the back side, inserted through as-made holes. This would be a fine addition to a collection of vintage American studio ceramics. Identification This piece is marked beneath, as shown. It is by the well known potter, Myrton N. Purkiss is listed in the Vasefinder online museum. Per Vasefinder, Purkiss was born in British Columbia, but he lived most of his life in Fullerton, California. While attending Fullerton High School, he studied pottery making under teacher Glen Lukens. Purkiss later attended Chouinard and the University of Southern California, where he was again Lukens’ student. He opened his first studio during the late 1930s. Purkiss was known for low-fired pottery which was decorated with crackle glazes. Condition The bowl looks very good overall, with light wear. There are no cracks. To the unglazed foot, there are a few small rough spots; I wouldn’t characterize these as flakes/chips, as they were probably from manufacturing/kiln removal.
