VINTAGE SAN ILDEFONSO PUEBLO BLACKWARE POTTERY BOWL BY. ROSE CATA GONZALES (1900 – 1989). Being offered today is a vintage piece of blackware pottery created by Rose Cata Gonzales believed to date to the late 1930′s. The piece in very nice overall condition with no chips or cracks to the body. There are a few flea bites on the surface and mineral residue from the clay. Marked on the base with a strong “Rose” and remnant of a paper label. A relative said that the family had many vacations to the southwest in the early 1950′s. The bowl was wrapped in newspaper that crumbled away like onion skin when I discovered it. I believed that the white mineral salt dust on the surface may be an indication of clay that she used during a certain time period. As The Antique Roadshow says, “don’t clean anything unless you know”. It is a beauty. Rose w as originally from. Ohkay Owingeh (San Juan) Pueblo. In the 1920s, Rose learned first how to make polished blackware. Rose was credited as the innovator of deep carved pottery around 1930 at San Ildefonso.
