Vintage Studio Pottery Bowl Description and Item Information Up for sale is this large, vintage, salt-glazed stoneware studio art pottery shallow bowl by the listed California artist, Richard Hieb. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This large, round piece is approximately 15 5/8 inches in diameter, and it is about 2 7/8 inches tall. Unpacked, it weighs over 5 1/4 pounds. The complex cobalt blue decoration contrasts nicely with the gray background; the underside is brown. This would be a fine and rare addition to a collection of vintage American studio ceramics. Identification This piece is by Richard Jacob Hieb of California. He is a listed artist in the Vasefinder online museum. The following information is from Vasefinder, and from the archives of the Lodi News Sentinel from the 1940s and 1950s. Richard Hieb was a student of Tony Prieto at Mills College in Oakland. During the mid-1950s, Hieb studied abroad in Japan. He was the apprentice of and studied for three years with master potter and important mingei folk art movement figure, Shoji Hamada. Hieb had a one man show in Kagashima, Japan. Hieb was a first prize winner at the 30th Annual Kingsley Art Club Exhibition at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. During the late 1950s, Hieb was vice president of the Lodi Ceramic Guild and president of the Lodi Art Club. He worked in salt-glazed stoneware and lustre-painted porcelanous clay. He admired Japanese pottery, saying, The work is not meticulous, nor is it cast with professional skill, but the conceptions of each piece are primitive and free of form. Besides pottery, Hieb also created prize-winning paintings and weavings. He received first prize for a weaving that was displayed at the 1948 Arts & Crafts Exhibition at the California State Fair. He exhibited at the Haggin Museum in Stockton, California, where he had a one man show in 1956, displaying salt glazed stoneware that he produced at Mills College. Hieb also exhibited at the Nationals from 1949 to 1951, and again in 1956. Condition This piece looks very good overall, with light wear, but no chips. While examining it under my bright photography lights, I found a very fine, 1 3/4 inch hairline; this does not detract. I owned this plate for more than a decade without noticing it. Some scattered, small extra clay bits to the interior are as made. Slight asymmetry in shape is also as made. Terms of Sale 1. Payments must be received within three days of the end of the listing, unless prior arrangements have been made. Some countries have restrictions or prohibitions on certain classes of merchandise. And international government regulations prohibit such behavior. Individual computers may display colors differently. Vintage ARTIST DALE NEESE Pottery 9 Pc Handled BOWLS w/COVERED SERVING DISH. My feedback speaks for itself. Just part of an interesting collection of better women’s clothing, shoes and quality household items found at a local estate here in Huntington Beach, Ca. See our other listings for more items! Pre owned displayed and loved I contacted the artist and he said that these were his “antiques, ” in other words, some of his earlier works as he stated that he no longer uses these glazes. Each bowl measures about 6 5/9 inches across the top (not including the handle) by 3 inches tall. The covered dish is 8 3/8 inches across the top of the bowl without the lid; with the lid on it is 9 inches across by about 3 1/2 inches tall. The bowls are about 3/8 inch thick. There is a hole in the top of the lid for steam/heat making it perfect to keep and serve tortillas. The bowls are super-sized! These is an awesome set and certainly one of a kind Hand Wash ds23. Condition: Great condition; One of the bowls is about 1/8 inch shorter than the rest, has crazing on the inside bottom. The inside bottom is also darker than the rest. No differences on the outside decoration or glaze. Non of these have any chips, cracks or repairs. Like I said, they have either been displayed only… Or if they were ever used, they were very well taken care of. I guarantee the item to be as described. Questions: Feel free to contact me with any questions. Powered by SixBit’s eCommerce Solution. Here is a vintage 1920′s Bauer Pottery Los Angeles #9 Yellow Ware bowl hand painted by artist Helen V. In the 1920′s there were commercial artists who bought white stone ware and yellow ware from Bauer Pottery and painted directly on the pieces. Helen had a L. Studio and this was one of her pieces. The abstract floral design is done in orange, gold, brown and green colors. The bowl measures 5″ tall and 10 3/4″ across. It is a good solid bowl at 3 lbs. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, crazing, hairlines or repairs (when “plucked” or “thumped” it rings true no hidden hairlines). It is a gorgeous piece of hand decorated Bauer Pottery. The bowl is marked, “Bauer 9 Los Angeles”. The artist signed the bottom Helen V. The item “Vintage 1920′s Bauer Pottery L. A.
