Vintage Scheier Pottery Bowl Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage Scheier pottery bowl. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This piece has a fabulous variegated, micro crystalline glaze over its simple, footed form. It is mostly blue, with some areas of olive green. This pot is approximately 2 1/2 inches tall, with a rim diameter of about 7 inches. Unpacked, this finely thrown piece weighs 9.7 ounces. This would be a great addition to a collection of American studio ceramics. The Scheiers are listed artists in the Vasefinder online museum. Per Vasefinder, Edwin Scheier studied art in New York, and he was a WPA era supervisor for the Southern States Federal Arts Project. Mary Goldsmith studied in New York and Paris; in Virginia, she was director at the Big Stone Gap Art Center and the Abingdon Art Center. The couple met and married in 1935. The Scheiers set up a studio in Glade Spring, Virginia. They moved to New Hampshire in 1938 after being invited by the League of Arts and Crafts, and they taught at the University of New Hampshire. They trained Puerto Ricans in ceramics as part of Operation Bootstrap. Prior to 1968, Mary threw the pottery and Edwin decorated them. The Scheiers exhibited at the Nationals from 1940 to 1960, and during 1964 and 1966. Condition The piece looks very good overall, with light wear and no cracks. To the rim, there were two tiny flakes which were smoothed and touched-up. These do not detract (I can only find them because I know where they were); please see Photo 7 for an example.
