Vintage Myrton Purkiss Studio Pottery Bowl Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage studio art pottery bowl by the listed California artist, Myrton Purkiss. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This bowl has abstract decoration to its interior, with a white crackle glazed background; the exterior has a gray finish. This piece stands approximately 2 inches tall; it has a rim diameter of about 9 3/8 inches. Unpacked, it weighs 2 pounds 2.0 ounces. It has a hanging wire on the back side, inserted through as-made holes. This would be a fine addition to a collection of vintage American studio ceramics. Identification This piece is marked beneath, as shown. It is by the well known potter, Myrton N. Purkiss is listed in the Vasefinder online museum. Per Vasefinder, Purkiss was born in British Columbia, but he lived most of his life in Fullerton, California. While attending Fullerton High School, he studied pottery making under teacher Glen Lukens. Purkiss later attended Chouinard and the University of Southern California, where he was again Lukens’ student. He opened his first studio during the late 1930s. Purkiss was known for low-fired pottery which was decorated with crackle glazes. Purkiss exhibited at the Pacific Coast Exhibition and Sale during the 1950s, at the Nationals from 1947 to 1952, and at the 1952 Los Angeles County Fair’s 6000 Years Art in Clay. Condition The bowl looks very good overall, with light wear. There are no cracks. To the unglazed foot, there are a few small rough spots; I wouldn’t characterize these as flakes/chips, as they were probably from manufacturing/kiln removal. As made, there is a very small (1/16 inch) bubble pop to the interior; a few tiny bubble pops to the rim are also as made. Variations in glazing are as made. Terms of Sale 1. Payments must be received within three days of the end of the listing, unless prior arrangements have been made. Some countries have restrictions or prohibitions on certain classes of merchandise.
